  • I'm also wondering whether the platform shape of the pedal isn't pretty redundant in my case given that the Vaypors have (reportedly) the stiffest sole around? And if so, wouldn't I be just as well off with one of those minimal eggbeaters?

I think Zinn talks about a problem whereby if the shoe has little contact with the pedal surface it will rock from side to side and eventually fatigue crack your carbon sole.

Eggbeaters are designed so that the [MTB] shoe pushes down on the area of the spindle to the left and right of the 'wings'.

Disclaimer: I did the Etape on eggbeaters using Mavic superlight MTB shoes and shoe / pedal interface stiffness was the least of my problems.

Thanks. In the meantime I've been scouring weight weenies and other forums and it seems most threads about eggbeaters died out prior to 2010. Oh well, for a moment I thought I was onto something there; minimal shoes + minimal pedals.
Still might go back to Time for road use, but if so I guess I'll have to look for some stiff-soled MTB shoes?
