  • My first clipless system was Time Atac (alium pedals + giro privateer shoes) which I bought on @dammit 's recommendation and have generally liked until they went to shit.
Now I'm trying SPD-SL on my road bike for the first time (Shimano 105 alloy + blue cleats + Bont Vaypor shoes) and I'm just not feeling it. I suppose there is a breaking in period for the cleat after which it'll feel a bit nicer. But I just can't see the clunky and plasticky sensation ever completely dissappear.

I'm also wondering whether the platform shape of the pedal isn't pretty redundant in my case given that the Vaypors have (reportedly) the stiffest sole around? And if so, wouldn't I be just as well off with one of those minimal eggbeaters? I see people suggesting Crank Bros Candy for roadie use, but I'm considering going straight for the tiny ones?

And while I normally hate hacks and conversions, it would seem that the plastic buildup/frame around the crank bros conversion kit has the extra benefit of protecting the cleats sufficiently to avoid this problem?

@smallfurry - you have Bont Vaypors don't you?

  • I like Crank Bros but wouldn't use them on fixed/ for skidding, they just don't feel secure enough. I have Candy pedals but I don't think my shoes (sidis and diadoras, both MTB) actually make much contact with the platform, so eggbeaters probably just as comfy.

    (forgot to reply @starfish&coffee )

  • Mavic XM719 rims... Can I really go up to a 2.3 tyre on them? I'm repurposing my polo bike into a super fun beach cruiser beast...

  • Go for it.

  • You sticking big apples on? I've run them on similar width rims without problems, although wider is better really.

  • Big Apples, Supremes or Kojaks... Whatever I can find for not too many $$$$...

Nice, I'll do that this week... This is gonna be fun!!!

  • Woah, and I'm wringing my hands over running 35mm tires on 23mm rims!

  • I ran 2.3" tyres on a 19mm rim for aged and I'm still alive.

  • We have just bought a commercial Land Rover discovery and it has a flat loading surface in the rear. We want to remove half of it but it has been installed with one way bolts how can we undo them or is it like to require cutting a slot to use a screwdriver?

  • Try welding some hex bolt heads onto the top of the bolts then use a spanner. I've found in the past that the dremmel/screwdriver option often doesn't generate enough torque.

  • Yeah, not worried about safety as much as ride quality and the ability to run slightly lower psi.

  • Can anyone recommend me a decent, comfortable mouse? I do CAD all day (2 and 3D) and the standard Dell mouse is turning my hand into a claw.

Apparently shops don't have mice out to fiddle with any more.

  • My shipping cost to Canada stays at €19,95 in spite of me adding more things, including fenders and rims, to my shopping cart.
    Is Bike24 a wizard?

  • Is this an inline seatpost? Looks like one to me but it doesn't say so in the description:

  • Is Bike24 a wizard?

Far from it, they just have one flat rate to Canada for most stuff, although wheels are €20 extra.

  • You said it yourself, it look like it because of the angle it shot at.

    side view is this;

  • it doesn't say so in the description:

In the description it says "Offset: 15mm"

No it isn't, clearly your eyesight isn't as good as it once were.

  • Oops, I was looking for google images of it, I should have just read the description... My bad...

On the subject, if I went for that type of clamp design:

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lightweight-Black-Alloy-Bike-Mtb-Inline-Seatpost-Seatpin-3-Sizes-/121194758677?var=&hash=item1c37c54215

... would it be strong enough to take a carradice bagman?

    Ta!

  • clearly your eyesight isn't as good as it once were

    Clearly you're a massive cunt :-)

This is why we need proper quoting and a clear indication when users have retrospectively changed their posts.

  • The bagman forces a more forward setting of the saddle as it needs space behind the seatpost clamp and I don't like it... Hoping to cancel that with an inline seatpost...

  • I'm also wondering whether the platform shape of the pedal isn't pretty redundant in my case given that the Vaypors have (reportedly) the stiffest sole around? And if so, wouldn't I be just as well off with one of those minimal eggbeaters?

I think Zinn talks about a problem whereby if the shoe has little contact with the pedal surface it will rock from side to side and eventually fatigue crack your carbon sole.

Eggbeaters are designed so that the [MTB] shoe pushes down on the area of the spindle to the left and right of the 'wings'.

Disclaimer: I did the Etape on eggbeaters using Mavic superlight MTB shoes and shoe / pedal interface stiffness was the least of my problems.

  • Has anyone got a pair of these pedals kicking about unwanted?
