  • To add to the list of skidder HC champs (screw modesty!), I took Manchester Wheelers' Club HC Championship a couple of weeks back. No outright event wins, and if the cup was open to non-members, I'd probably have finished third or fourth overall, but still understandably chuffed.
Looking forward to maybe spotting a few famous names engraved on the trophy.

    Rd. 1, 05/08/15, Cat & Fiddle, 5th/1st MW (00:21:31), on 51x19 (70" fixed).
    Rd. 2, 19/08/15, The Brickworks, 2nd/1st MW (00:06:53), on 51x20 (67" fixed)
Rd. 3, 02/09/15, Briargrove Road, 6th/1st MW (00:03:24), on 51x22 (61" fixed, over-geared, but no chainring smaller than a 51... Omniums on an HC bike!)

In addition, won MW TT Scratch Championship (fixed)...

... And, not the correct thread but I won bronze in the MW Club Track Championships (third first claim/fourth overall) behind a current National Masters IP Champ, and a 2014 World Masters TP silver medallist.

So, stoked with my first season of regular competition, and for 2016, looking at opens, races longer than 10s, and trying to eat properly, actually training (i.e., riding more than just commuting and pootling to the shops) etc...
Currently ignoring remaining 2015 events in order to equip bike (a Dolan Pursuit Champion) with a front disc brake, for couple of damp, hilly, spring TTs to be ridden fixed.
Maybe see a few of you at some open events next year!

  • Tennis match after the hill climb?

  • Channeling the 90s Boardman and Dangerfield aesthetic (hunted high and low for an Assos headband)

  • Well done! Bloody good time up C+F, especially as it doesn't really suit fixed.

  • Thanks :-) Bit of a grind, but had to be for the flat/downhill bits. Gearing probably about right on the day.

  • I see I'm not the only rider to attract the Red Lights of Doom.

  • Hounslow Sporting 27
Saturday 17th October, 2 pm start

Can I remind you about this event, which was set up with lfgss in mind. Any machine can be used, but any awards will go only to riders on fixed or single freewheel.

It consists of three laps of an undulating circuit (The Gracious Pond Circuit), and although it is nominally a club event, private time trial entries are invited (a PTT is a TT ridden in a club event by someone who is not a member of the promoting club, so you are all welcome). The circuit is on quiet (well, by Surrey standards) roads between Chertsey and Chobham - the start is the same as the Valley End 10 course, near the back gate of St Peter's Hospital.

Although it will be possible to enter on the line it would be helpful if you could let me know if you intend to come as the event will benefit if we can give some thought to laying out the field. If you let me know your recent times by Saturday 10th October (10, 25 and/or 50) you will be given a handicap allowance and be able to compete in that section.

This is intended as a fun event. It has been run since 2010, but was cancelled last year because of road work traffic lights on the course. I have just checked the 'roadworks.org' site and it looks as though we should have better luck this year.

You may enter on the line, but obviously this would exclude you from the handicap section.

    Any queries - ask here.
Entries - just send me a pm.

  • @clubman when is the event?

  • 17th Oct

  • Chris, the last time I rode this it was three laps :0)

  • Thankyou Sam! You spotted my error which I have now corrected.

I have also made the date more obvious.

I do find it's easier to proof read on paper, rather than the screen.

  • This event was great fun when I rode it a few years ago... not fixed though...

  • For low money would I get a better frame than a older 2nd hand p3?

Want a tt frame to train on that is also decent.
Do not want a piece of shit.

  • Almost certainly not, especially with TriRig brakes and if you do an internal cable mod or run a single ring.

  • This is the one I'm talking about (frame/forks, not the other parts), for clarification. Think they can be had fairly cheap now.

Also presume it's UCI legal, for BC champs. Which I really missed racing.

  • presume it's UCI legal, for BC champs

Strictly speaking, you need the UCI legal seat post to make it fully compliant, which will add about £175 to your build if you have to buy new.

  • As @umop3pisdn says, so long as you can adopt a good position given it's geo, you are unlikely to find anything much better at a reasonable price.

The mods he was suggesting include drilling the top tube just behind the steerer to create a new port for the gear cables (http://blog.aeroweenie.com/2013/10/aero-tuneup.html). It'll void the warranty (which is no longer relevant if the bike is 2nd hand) and it will get most of the cables completely out of the wind. I doubt either the mod or the Tri rig brakes would fall foul of the UCI although I don't know.

If the cable mod does scupper your UCI ambitions then a cable tie round the offending cables just behind the stem keeps the cables tucked in close to the frame, but it's not as neat.

  • Ah okay thanks. That's something to look out for then.

Thanks @ewanmac I'd run di2 so cable mod would not be needed.

  • I doubt either the mod or the Tri rig brakes would fall foul of the UCI although I don't know.

TriRig brakes are fine for UCI bikes, they've been used by ProTour riders. Drilling the frame probably violates the UCI prohibition on modifying components.

  • If the cable mod does scupper your UCI ambitions then a cable tie round the offending cables just behind the stem keeps the cables tucked in close to the frame, but it's not as neat.

And, in my experience, if you aren't careful about cutting the end of the cable tie, you'll end up cutting the insides of your knees on it when you're out of the saddle. I have the scars to prove it...

  • Why are you out of the saddle on a TT bike, especially with gears?

  • I'm not sure about the P3, but upgrading the P2 to Di2 isn't strait-forward either. Either you run those ugly stick on cable guides that Shimano offer, or you end up drilling the BB for a semi internal Di2 setup with the battery mounted on the chain-stay (http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=4494984;).

    Or you go Sram wireless!

@danstuff I actually have a natty little smooth edged cable tidying thingamy instead of a cable tie... miraculously the lbs took positive action and upgraded my old cable tie without me asking :-)

  • Nice. I'm planning on drilling the top tube on mine and re-routing the cables, although that could cause issues at the Tour of Cambridgeshire TT, given that it's run under UCI rules.

  • Ah, turns it won't - UCI rules only apply if you go to the Amateur Worlds. Unlikely to be an issue...
