  • First ride over the new commute. An hour door to door over 10miles, including getting lost around the one way system with an impromptu tour of the west end. Half an hour better that public transport. Not looking forward to College Road on the way home at mile 8 though.

  • @stevo_com Aaron I BET you post here in the depths of winter saying how you much you relish the climb up College Rd at mile eight of your commute home, but skidding down it in ice is less fun.

We are all masochists. That's why we put up with each other On Here.

  • I relish NOTHING!!!!!!

  • You don't even relish a good relish?

  • Can't beat a little College Road sprint on the way home, unless it's Gipsy Hill.

  • Gipsy Hill is the more direct route. Buggered if I'm getting up that on 52x17. Although, might make a nice walk.

  • You've got Beer Rebellion half way up...

  • ...mispost

  • So it turns out that the best bike ever for commuting in London is a 3 speed Dawes kingpin with a big framemounted rack on the front and the world's squealiest brakes. 10/10 would have a big grin again

  • I love it! Kingpins are rad.

  • Made it as far as the chippy up Gipsy then walked.

  • you cant lose an altercation when you pull the shooting stars. #rep

  • Close call this morning, adrenaline currently pumping. The front wheel of my Brompton glanced off the front driver's side wheel and wheel arch. Dropped the bike but managed not to go down myself.

I was on the Torrington place bike path heading west and a driver turned across me at the last second to make a right on to Gordon Street, wiping me out in the process. Most dangerous part of my commute and I knew it was going to get me one day.

The driver and his wife pulled up and jumped out, both in their late 60s/ 70s immediately apologetic with excuses such as "We're late for a hospital appointment" and "I'm lost" and the classic "I'm such a good driver normally".

1/10 hope the day home is less crashy.

  • Glad you are ok

  • Might use that as a benchmark

  • "I'm such a good driver normally"

"This has never happened to me before."

  • @Cazakstan I was reading about the new proposals for the bike tracks along there, I think the Gordon Road turning was mentioned as the worst conflict point/most collisions between bikes & motors. So I guess the real fault is with the planners. Glad you're ok, hope the Brommy is relatively unscathed too.

  • Glad you got mad skillz.

  • It's an awful road layout, and the change, which is meant to be happening soon I think, should hopefully improve it.

    Glad you're okay, @Cazakstan.

  • And our dog, oh, he normally never bites either... ;)

    Good you're OK :)

  • On the roads (cos no cycle lanes...)
Lady nodder, overtake, she walks through reds so I met her later on the green box half a mile down, I overtake again. Another nodder holding me up before that...who nearly went left of a lorry through a tiny gap.

Was getting ready to shout NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO but she went on the kerb. Phew.

Then at work there's a headless seagull laying in the car park. Gave it a burial.

    5/10 would repeat commute

  • I find it impossible to get really mad at old people, I'm just put in mind of my parents.
Really think re-testing ought to happen every 5 years from age 60 or 65 though. Your body/eyes/mind can deteriorate so fast.

  • Sounds scary. Glad you came out unscathed.

There was an epidemic of Bike Scheme wheelsuckers this morning. No close calls or unwarranted aggression though, so that's something.

    6/10
