Had a panic with my rs685s, after the recent deluge my front calipers pistons got very sticky and then seized yesterday. A few accounts on the interwebz said when shimano pistons seize the caliper needs to be replaced.
I also found a few people suggesting to carefully pump the pistons outward and to wipe them clean with isopropyl alcohol. Then whilst the piston is out to wipe the sides with mineral oil and then push them back in. I tried this last night but it did not seem to make any difference. So I ordered a replacement caliper.
Repeated the process this morning and hey presto, pistons are retracting nicely and I have working brakes again. It probably means I ought to clean the rear ones before I get the same problem. Now I just need to go in to Evans and tell them I wish to cancel the order.

Looks like a static pad design?
In other news I hooked up those Acor hydro calipers to the wife's cross bike. Quick test spin and they didn't feel particularly different to the Spyres that came off. Underwhelmed.

Yeap static inner pad. Havent tried it but it seems like a more refined BB7, not cheap and at that price I would have expected dual actuated pads ala TRP.

I would have expected dual actuated pads ala TRP.
Problem is that the dual actuated pads is that they felt a little harder to pull, as if the return spring is really strong due to having two spring instead of just the one on the Klamper/BB7.
The old BB7 were much easier to modulated despite needing pads adjusting every once in a while (not really a disadvantage in my book).

Think I'm gonna put BB7 Road on my tourer.

Didnt think neither the stiffer springs were a problem (though TRP should have had a grub screws for the springs to adjust for rebound according to rider's preferance) nor the single actuated BB7 was inadequate, just for the Paul I would have expected something more build wise at that price.
I agree with you and the BB7 is still my favourite mechanical disc brake - easy to align to the rotor (as they have those conical washers), simple to dial in and maintain but didnt like the flimsy red adjuster on the outside which you do lose (this is from bike polo use) and the fact that they can seize up because of grubby internals partly due to the lack of bearings for the actuation arm (pretty sure you know this Ed, it's more for those who have never maintained a BB7 before and just get a new set when they seized up).
I have moved to hydraulics (Shimano M615) but I still carry the BB7 setup (yeap, lever, cable and caliper, spare pads too!) just in case I need a backup. For the price and what you get, the BB7 is bettered by none.

Other factor is quality control of the BB7 isn't consistent, I found when building bike, there's a handful that simply can't be set up properly whether the rest is a doodle.

I have heard of that, but I have been pretty lucky setting up, never had a problem on those for myself and a handful for mates, obviously havent built as many sets up as you have.

Do you mean the red adjuster is loose and fails off or breaks? Is it available as a spare?

• #939
Yes and yes.

Thanks, useful to know.

Coventry eagle's not the first to report this... But I'm not sure it's a big problem any more... I remember everyone complaining of it about five years ago... Either they fixed it or everyone learnt that the red knobs are red to warn you to be careful with them! :)

Be careful with red knobs... Hmmmm... ;)

Which replacement pads for spyres? Mainly used for commuting.
-
• #948
Basic Shimano pads - they're cheap (£6-8) and not shit.
