If you have the time and basic knowlage and are willing to do some research for, when things go wrong then it's defo worth it. A friend of mine at work is far more technical than I am (I am already above average) has juat built his 2nd and is happy with it, but I have heard him spending hours to get issues ironed out. Bottom line is, in my opinion, it's time vs money. I don't have the time, so I chose a Mac out of a box.
I have a feeling that the time needed will be needed exactly when I don't have it.
Also, I still need a laptop for on site work, so if my current MBP dies, I'll be looking at
Hackintosh: £1000ish
Macbook air: £1100ish
Or just get a Macbook pro 13"for £1600ish and be done with it. There's talk about new processors early next year, so fingers crossed it'll live until then
