  • Felt my freewheel slip a couple of times about 50 degrees where it just didn't engage randomly and then decided to bite. Seemed to then suddenly be fine again for a couple of hours, should I be worried about it?

  • should I be worried about it?

Only if you're worried about it suddenly being a freewheel in both directions in the middle of a commute and leaving you stranded.

Is it easily serviceable? It's usually just a sticky mess inside causing the pawls to get stuck, and needs cleaning and regreasing. Or just replacing.

  • when did tange sekei go from making decent quality steel headsets to ones made from what appears to be brie
i have a feeling the one i just bought isn't going to last a long time

  • Anyone help me ID this freehub? I am sure its campag, but my 9spd stuff doesn't fit, the freehub is slightly too big. It's got 8 splines and one slightly fatter than the others. 8spd? Which generation? @retrodicorsa??? Cheers

  • This is an 8-speed ExaDrive sprocket:

I'm not seeing the wide spline on your rotor, but ExaDrive 8-speed cassettes fit on the earlier rotors with equal width splines anyway.

  • Not sure, it's a shimano one. It's only been on the bike a few weeks.

  • @Olly398 - Does indeed look like later 8spd. Not many options other than to change the wheel(s) or everything else unfortunately. In some cases you can re-space cassettes with the appropriate spacers but 9spd spacers won't fit the slightly larger diameter 8spd freehub.

  • Thanks @retrodicorsa @mdcc_tester @Scilly.Suffolk, looks like 8 spd exadrive to me. I want to sell them actually but didn't know what to advertise them as!

  • I've decided to get a heart rate monitor. Is there a nice and not pricey ant+ option?

  • Need a bigger messenger style bag pronto, the Bigtop mini messenger doesn't cut the mustard for a full set of clothes, shoes and work accoutrements.

Where in central London can I pick one up tomorrow? Resorting to using my massive rucksack for the ride in.

  • What torque is recommended for the faceplate bolts of a Thomson X2?

  • I had similar from a shimano, probably one of the the pawls sticking, but bad after such a short time.

I'd recommend spending more than a tenner on a free wheel, that way if it's faulty it's worth actually sending it back! :)

  • Buying old stock I guess. I'll take some time to service it a bit better after I'm back from my holiday.

  • I think 5nm, though it may also depend on what your bars are made of and their manufacturers spec.

  • Thanks.

    Bars are aluminium. Zipp SL70.

I've got a feeling the stem faceplate is the weakest link :-/

  • Put some alu cranks and a Thomson seat post in the dishwasher last night.... Wont be doing that again.

Anyone know the best way to bring back a nice sparkle to aluminium? Went out and bought some 1500 and 2000 grit wet n dry but want to check here first...

  • One more - a hypothetical - would a builder find it easy to make a new steel fork for a frame with an over-sized head tube and make it look good? I am thinking of getting a rando style fork for the bike with lots of eyelets for the usual racks/mudguards. The 'low trail' fad has seeped in to my bones...

concerned that the over sized head-tube to fork transition will look shite.

  • Need fat crown to look good, or unicrown.

TBH best to ask the builder.

  • Need fat crown to look good, or unicrown.

Unicrown can look good, @Gandalf ( imo ).

  • who makes decent quality, relatively shallow profile chainring bolts (need to replace the ones that came on a felt tk3 as they arent shallow enough for DA or Sugino rings). There seem to be lots of options out there but i don't want to end up with soft ones, can anyone recommend any?

  • That's your Talbot right @BareNecessities ? Lovely, do you have a pic of it next to a 'normal' sized bike - just want to see if it is really as big as it looks , difficult to tell cos it is in proportion unlike many larger frames...

Unicrown might work but unicrown into tapered and curved forks is going to be tricky... have emailed builder @edscoble but believe he is currently bike packing around Iceland.

  • do you have a pic of it next to a 'normal' sized bike

This is the only one, I think.
