  • ill try keep this brief, but my gfs brother is looking to buy a new road bike

    • budget <£4000
    • full carbon
    • no second hand bikes/chinese express
    • no disc brakes

Because i'm not up to speed on road bike stuff i just advised general points e.g. definitely get a bikefit beforehand, do you want 1st/2nd hand,

he's open to building from individual parts but I guess its more cost effective to buy off the peg as a full package?

He was quite interested in specialised tarmac pro race? Yay/nay?
I thought you should expect dura ace at this price point, but he agreed there's not a great difference in performance anyway

  • With that spec, it sounds like a race bike. If he is racing and is planning to spend that much I'd hope he already has some ideas of his own.

I'd get a £1k bike first, sort out the fit and skills, invest later.

    Modern life problems.

Get something rad, like a Look / Time etc.

When I got my road bike I knew fuck all about road bikes, so the way I did it was to go to Bespoke Cycling in Farringdon, have them give me a bike fit, then tell me what they recommended from their own stock based on my fit and budget. Then I bought one of the bikes they recommended from them, and had them do the final adjustments. Totally hassle-free and I'm still very happy with the bike and the general experience. If he's in London then I would totally recommend he do that, even down to using the same shop, tbh.

  • £4k question needs to be asked in road bikes thread.
    Canyon sale is on.
