Always upgrade. Always.
Even if the upgrade removes some feature you love (happens occasionally), the performance benefits, bug fixes and security fixes vastly outweigh everything else.

Counter to that is permission creep. Apps keep asking for more permissions.

XPrivacy.

Cheers.
I've always been weary after having my iPhone 3 go from "functional" to "beyond shit" following an upgrade.
Quite pleased I grabbed an old one as it's pretty small, so I'm hoping to reapproariate it once my GF gets a decent phone. I have realised that the Moto X fits in no jersey zip pockets and doesn't feel overly secure in the others.

XPrivacy, or uninstall any app that asks for permissions you don't think they should have.
There are a number of apps I just won't install, be it Skype, LinkedIn, etc. Things other people think are critical.

I have bugger all apps installed.
-

Marshmallow will allow us to install apps and then grant or deny permissions as they are used. So you can still use some features but not others. Nice.

Serious question here: what are the dangers from not worrying about permissions and letting apps have free roam? I undestand the issues if you do mobile banking/PayPal from you phone but what harm can come if you don't?
I was very paranoid about security when I first got a smart phone but have become less so as I've installed more apps. -

Privacy invasion is the main thing that people worry about. Eg, linked in knowing all of your browsing habits, contacts' details, email contents and installed apps.

Has there been any indicator of when Android M will be coming out on the Nexus 5. Has any tried the developer preview? I'm tempted to give it a try but can't see many details on whether there is any limited functionality
I've used it. Works well.
Latest Google update should be pushed to you n5 though because of stagefright.

What do they do with this info though? Is it profiling or does it get sold on (and to what ends)?
-
• #16213
You don't know. That's the point.
What if they sell it to the stasi in our near future fascist state? Eh?

I have a 2013 moto x. Which is a great size. Looking for a new android phone of similar size or up to the size of standard iPhone 6. Suggestions?

• #16215
Fwiw I like my new Moto X.
-
• #16216
^ mine is great. Only thing that puts me off getting the new version is the size.

The screen on my phone (nexus 5) has today decided to completely give up, which in turn means i can't unlock the phone to allow my mac to transfer stuff from it.
Is there a way around this that doesn't involve having the phone repaired?
Thanks in advance. -

Windows might work
-
• #16221
Grab Android transfer for your Mac, job done... There may even be a better bit of software about now, have a look around...
-
• #16222
Android file transfer requires the screen to be unlocked so that the computer can access the phones storage, and as the screen is constantly blacked out that's a no.

HDMI out to tv and a usb mouse maybe

My Nexus 5 has been really struggling with connecting to Wifi in the last few days. Where it would normally connect as I'm range. Now it will take a while or not connect at all.
Anyone else had or having this issue?

Ordered a ZTE Blade S6 before lunch yesterday from eBuyer.
Free next day delivery voucher against my account.
They chose Yodel.
Yodel predict tomorrow.
Y U NO NEXTDAY?!?!?!?
My opinion: Upgrade. Android updates don't generally hurt phone performance (and have, in the past, improved it). Plus there may be some importantly security updates that you're missing.
