Hi, been a bit of a lurker for a while now but looking to buy my first geared road bike. I have been looking at this for a few weeks now, seems a good deal and prefer the black to the 105 model colours. Was just wondering whether 105 is more robust than Ultegra? Is it more worthwhile worth buying the black frame then building up myself?

Bought separately, new, those parts would cost about £1600. Remember the crankset / bottom bracket is press-fit BB30 which is trickier to install yourself, so maybe best buying the complete bike, if somewhere has it in your size for a good price. How tall are you? I guess 54cm is for people about 5ft9 / 5ft10. Don't know much about 105 5800 vs Ultegra 6800 - both are meant to be very good - but I'm gonna go for Ultegra. Ultegra should be more robust than 105. It's Dura Ace 9000 that has some parts which people have had issues with (cassette, levers fraying cables - although that has been fixed in the recent models).

Ye I'm just over 5'10", sat on a 56 CaadX in Evans the other day, I know the TT is a bit longer, but felt too long. £1,200 seemed quite a good price for what you get. Am I right in thinking that the Ultegra model is anodised rather than painted?
-
• #2631
Yes, anodised. It's exactly the same as the frameset-only version.
If you break it down it would be £550 frameset (if you can find it in your size), £470 groupset, £350 cranks, plus wheels and saddle etc etc. So yeah, seems like a good deal. Plus saves the hassle of assembling it yourself, or the cost of getting a shop to do it.

Cheers for the help.

At 5"10' I'd probably say go for a 54 to be on the safe side. I felt too stretched out on my CAAD7 that was (on paper) my size

I'm 5'10"ish (maybe 9"?) and I use a 54cm supersix - if i recall right it's the same geo as a caad10 (caad8 has a taller headtube). 100mm stem and setback post.

5'10" here on a 52 supersix

Short arms? 5'9" on a 54 cm here.

• #2637
Nah, 120mm stem.
54 would fit me with a 100

Nah, 120mm stem.
Must be quite a low front end with that setup. Don't think I could cope with such an aggressive riding position, but obviously suits you.
-
• #2639
How?
The reach on 52 and 54 is exactly the same:
-
• #2640
If you go for 56 instead of 54 you will need to compensate 9mm in stem/handlebar reach.

Turns out I had added my nicked CAAD10 to the household insurance after all. I'd insured it for £1200 with a £100 excess. NEW BIKE TIME!

I'm just over 5'10" and ride a 54cm Supersix with a 130mm stem, but then again i have outrageously long arms for my height

Yeah - Basically. My arms are 4" longer than they "should" be

Just wandered into Evans to check out the Supersix Evo. Looks pretty good on sale for £1,080. C'mon the payout!

Does your insurance pay you cash or vouchers?
