Yep thats plan B if nothing comes .. I saw 5700 compact crankset for £74.99 somewhere; can I get rid of 50t and just use 34t?

34t will be very spinny, minimum would be 38t (and even that is still quite spinny).

It's a commuter for your girlfriend, you're way overthinking this.
