  • How long do Open Pave's last people?
In comparison to say GP4000 or other popular tyres I might have tried?

  • 6000 for a front
    4000 for a back

  • Cheers very much. Sounds like they'll do.

  • that's miles.

  • Wider tyres = last longer too.

  • Out of curiosity, why the hatred for light butyl tubes? I've got them in 2 sets of wheels (Conti Supersonics), they've given no problems and are a cheap way to save about 50g a wheel.

  • Haven't ridden a winter in the UK yet. Will Challenge Paris Roubaix or Open Pave just be plain stupid to use? Won't mind tyres getting dirty, but will I be standing roadside, angry and frustrated?
In DK I would have gone for Durano Plus or GP4000 with anti puncture belt (don't know the correct term).

  • I did all of last winter on Paves, think I got 2 punctures? On really shitty Chilterns roads. For me an occasional puncture is worth feel + grip of a decent tyre over something more puncture resistant.

  • Riding where? Mainly urban roads, country lanes or a mix of both?

  • Open Pave will do pretty much everything and are pretty fast. I don't bother with anything else in the winter.

In other news - I borrowed a wheel from my girlfriends bike this morning because I was running late and couldn't be arsed to fix the puncture in mine. It had a Rubino on. Awful tyres, even in the dry I could feel it squirming around and christ they're slow. I used to ride them all the time too.

  • Well 50-100km countryside with occasional country lanes. But during winter I normally stay on tarmac.

I will probably give PR a go..

  • Isn't the puncture protection a bit shit on the Challenge PR's?

  • Dunno. I wouldn't ride Open Paves in the winter in DK, but if you wouldn't mind doing it in the UK, I guess I see no reason for not giving the Challenges a go. Weird logic perhaps. I just thought puncture protection would be the same, as they seem to have similar weight, thread pattern and size.

    PR: 300 tpi, 27mm, 285g,
    OP: 320, 27mm, 285g,

The lower tpi on the PR suggest to me that, although not a lot, sidewalls will be tougher. And they state: "Road / Cobble / Gravel Racing / Big Riders" Which sounds like me

  • Life is too expensive for fast tyres*

    *in anything except races

  • Butyl for everything*

    *except races

  • No, but I would like to. Their 25mm are nice so I don't see why the 28mm wouldn't be nice also.

  • Caught in a trap...

  • Winter tyres typically being so reliable I tend to ride them through two years before thinking I should change them for something else...

  • No, latex is more porous or something and lets more air out. That's one reason they're stupid for commuting on. Anyone telling you otherwise is a #buyer with more cash and time than smarts.

  • Factor in his username is 'skinny' and then lose about 1000mi off each of those values if you're more like 90kg.

  • They don't roll as well as latex and they are far more susceptible to punctures.

I've used a lot of these bad boys recently becoming a bit slack on my patching pile...

  • Commuting or racing/training? For me, not having to get covered in shit whilst repairing flats in the pissing rain outweighs any tyre feel advantage.

Once again, factor in @umop3pisdn weighs as much as Hoy's left leg so his durability statements need to be adjusted if you're a heavier lump of human.

  • Oh hai hippy. Replies all

  • I'm a 90kg sort-of sprinter - last year I got similar mileage to @skinny on my pave's. Bombproof until they go.. and then it's flatflatflatflatflatflat.
