It's easy to see the bad because a: that's all anybody ever wants to talk about and b: we have such a hugely increased access to information compared with even a decade ago that there's an order of magnitude more bad news to read if you care to look.As above, being of a certain age 60+ I think we live in great times. Off course peoples expectations are far greater these days but that does not negate the fact that the "good old days " were far from that for the majority of the population.
