It's easy to see the bad because a: that's all anybody ever wants to talk about and b: we have such a hugely increased access to information compared with even a decade ago that there's an order of magnitude more bad news to read if you care to look.

Off course peoples expectations are far greater these days but that does not negate the fact that the "good old days " were far from that for the majority of the population.
