  • I'm very inflexible in my brand allegiances.

    Stuck in a rut?

  • Do any London bike shops still do Michelin Pro Race tyres?

    http://www.decathlon.co.uk/C-310003-michelin

  • Ah, thanks, amey. Now, why didn't I think of the main French bike shop in London ... ?

It looks a little like remaining stock, but I'll have a look there.

  • I bought a pro4 in condor a while ago. No idea if they still sell them

  • That's where I used to get mine, but they only had three Pro4s in red left. Condor is normally where I notice first that certain lines just aren't done any more.

  • Weighing in on the earlier commuter tyres debate -
My commuter bike has 25mm gators at up to 90psi. I say up to because morning hurriedness often means they go acouple of weeks between pumps, so we have a situation like this morning where I've been commuting at around 60psi before I do something about it. Anyway! 2 p*nctures in two years I think, not sure of milage since I'm a dirty freelancer who sometimes doesn't get out of bed. I'd guess around 5000+ km. Last flat I had, I pulled out many shards of glass and assorted crap from the tyre, but only one tiny bit had gone through.

Road bike - the summer one's on GP4000s, and I get through maybe one and a half/two rear tyres a summer, three quarters of a front tyre, and average two/three flats maybe? That's riding 1000-1300km a month.
Winter road bike had 4seasons on for the first time last winter, and they were ok. Felt pretty slow, but the only flat was on the Hell of The North ride when I hit a gravel road pothole hard. Might try something different when I wear through the tyres.

  • GP 4000sII in 28mm turn out a little bigger, and then some more on 25mm rims (19mm internal).

    A little under 32mm at 80psi!

  • how do ribmos measure up? i want something slightly smaller than the 32c paselas on my brooklyn

  • They're true to their size. 35 is bigger than 32 Pasela.

  • HAd a customer with those tyres, the 28mm do measure up near 28mm.

  • both @JB and @edscoble are the people I thought would come to the rescue. glad my assumptions were correct

  • I'm trying to cool off by planning out my winter bike...does anyone have good recommendations for snow/ice tires?

  • Recommendation; don't get it.

  • Two punctures in 5 days. One was a catastrophic sidewall/tread gash in the gp4000s. Annoying since I'd only done 1000km on it.
One this morning on the commuter - cursed the gatorskins but turned out my rim tape was knackered.

Anyway, that's the third GP4000 with a fucked sidewall. Definite weak point on the tyre.

  • Made weaker with the wider rims, Conti tyres aren't optimised for this.

  • Oh really? That's interesting. Oh well, going tubeless as soon as the rear wheel gets fixed.
On that note - Schwalbe One tubeless? And in 25?

  • Buy them from Germany much much cheaper

  • bikediscount.de? Yeah, I use that from time to time.

  • Would love some hive-mind advice on what are currently considered robust but supple/comfortable tyres for my road biek. Got some compass tyres on my commuter and the experience has been a revelation in that a comfy tyre and a fast tyre don't have to be exclusive.

I suspect I'm already using a reasonable candidate (23c Conti GP4000sII) but willing to consider other options.

Probably can't go much bigger than 23 because of brake clearance on the rear (and I want to re-fit crud roadracers when appropriate). I know Conti's tend to come up big, though.

I am also into gumwalls because I'm a bit of a fashion victim. Clement Strada? Challenge Elite? Vittoria Open Corsa?

    Where should I be looking?

  • open pave + latex is on point

  • Cool cool. How d'you find the wear? Though they're going on my "weekend" bike so it's not the biggest issue.

They tend to come up true to size? They'll be on Mavic Ksyriums which I think have a 15mm internal width? I suppose anything's gonna be a bit bulby!

  • I don't have Open Pave .. I find them bit pricey for what they are.

If it's a fair weather bike Veloflex Master is a good choice. Ticks all the boxes.

  • Fair weather is over for this year. Time for the winter tyres.

  • fine .. strada LGG 120tpi then; no gumwall though.
