    The Alfine cranks say they give 42.7mm chainline, but the Surly ultra new hubs say they give a chainline of 42.5mm. Is it necessary to implement some kind of spacer jiggery-pokery to eliminate the 2mm difference? The BB (Tiagra external) length is 68mm so I don't think I can reduce it by a smaller BB...

  • They'll have been quoted without specifying the chainring thickness, sprocket thickness or sprocket offset (base of threads to teeth).

    You're still going to have to measure it.

    For differences of less than 1mm your only realistic option is spacers between the chainring and spider.
