Is it normal to be able to see this gap? I am assuming it's the wave spring washer but just thought I should check.

It looks similar to the gap on my crankset (SiSLs on CAAD10) , which has been put together in the same way by two independent mechanics.

If they are SISLs, not SISL2s, it should look very different, as the wave washer is on the drive side :)
