  • After looking at that pic of @negaatio Pomp for too long I decided to chuck my Wound Up on mine.

I love the look and in general it rides nice but there are a few problems,

    1. I really don't need another (brakeless) fixed bike.
    2. The fixed side of my hub must have a wacky chainline or something coz it's making a
death creak like nothing I've heard before.
    3. Brakeless with heavy wheels and big tyres aint much fun, especially when you're worrying
      about afore mentioned death creak.

I've never really gotten on with fixed and a brake so I think I'll go back to the freewheel. Not sure what to do about brakes though, I have some centre pulls that would probably go nice on the front, not sure about combining that with a rear canti though?...

  • Cheapest would be to keep it fixed, put bigger tyres and a clamp on front brake.

Next option is free wheel and adding a back break, which by the looks of it would require a new hub at least.

  • The build looks nice. I think pomps really suit a straight fork.

  • Agreed, I wish they came that way by default. Thinking about getting a carbon for mine...

  • sloping toptube needs a straight fork

  • I'm pretty excited about my build. The frame is currently being powdercoated by the guys at Seabass in Peckham this colour (it's less greeny in reality):

Got some Kenisis Pure CX forks ex demo on the cheap and some Alfine cranks - am I right in thinking the Alfines are the only single ring 130bcd external bearing crankset? If so it sux balls the smallest they come in is 170mm (I have little legs).

The only question hanging over my head is the wheelset - I have every intention of using this for crossracing so it's either Mavic Open Pro or another set of Archetypes laced to some kind of basic track hub with sealed bearings. If I go this way would you think I'd need anything much above Novatec/Planet X hubs? I was thinking about the Surly cross hubs as they're servicable (and can take a QR skewer) but is it strictly necessary? I have max £250 for this wheelset.

The other probably silly option is to get a front 60mm carbon wheel from a Chinese importer to match this 24h hole flip flop aluminium braking surface one I got from 'Jerry' from Speedcarbon11 off the bay. Is 24h too low for xc racing? I'm like 62kg.

Any thoughts from you lovely people?

  • Heads up on Archetypes and Surly hubs - both are on sale at hubjub, 30£ a pop, might save you a few quid for the wheelbuild...

  • Awesome shout @andy_k! I think that might answer my questions...

  • Bah! They're out of black Archetypes in 32s, cheers for the heads up though

  • Jeeze I must have just got in under the wire. Thanks tho @andy_k you saved me like £100 on these wheels!!!

  • am I right in thinking the Alfines are the only single ring 130bcd external bearing crankset?

The FC-S500 (Alfine) is basically an FC-4600 (Tiagra) crankset with a chainguard instead of an outer ring, so if you want shorter cranks just get 165mm 4600s and grind the teeth off the outer ring :-)

  • anyone got a size large pompino they wanna part with? $$ waiting

  • That's seems like both a yes and a no depending on one's Dremel tool skills.

  • If you don't fancy your Dremel skillz, use the stock 39T inner with this cheap bash guard (if they ship internationally), much cheaper than getting the Alfine guard as a spare part.

  • What I'm scared if asking is if I could do the same with an ultegra crankset - in which case this Alfine cranks will taunt me forever.

  • I could do the same with an ultegra crankset

    Or any other road crank.

  • Not mine and a horrible picture, but I really like the BMW look of this build

  • I normally do not like wound ups, but the canti version is strangely arousing on that frame colour, matched with silver cockpit and post. Good work!

    These

    or these

would finish off the steam-punk vibe nicely...

  • What's the clearances on the new models? One could fit 42's in the older one, is it the same with new?

  • Nice bike !

Do you use mini v-brake or normal ones ?

  • @raphaelc

    Simba:

    Not mine

  • Does anyone knows if normal v-brakes works with Pompino V4 or you need mini v-brake ?

On One says mini v-brake but maybe it works with normal v-brake too.

    Thanks

  • Of course they work, but since they have different cable pull, you need to have mtb-levers too.

  • ^this

Flat bar, mtb levers, full size v
Drop bar, road levers, mini v or cantis.

  • You can get drop bar levers that work with full V brakes also.
