  • I passed up on one of these in the US about 15 years ago, $100... 😱

  • This looks like fun. In budget too.

I need a new clippy tuner. Bought a cheapy the other day after losing the surprisingly good cheapy I've been using for a few years. The new cheapy sucks. Thinking of the Polytune Clip. Which looks like an iphone 5. Cool!

  • They had one in Goldtop Studios when we made the Tacticians album. I think we used it on a few things. It was filthy good.

  • I'm still struggling to stay in like with my acoustic guitars after playing that Gibson. My sigma is a pigma to play and sounds dull and lifeless to my ears while the Guild plays fantastically but is pretty thin sounding.

Other than sell the lot and buy a vintage Gibson, I'm wondering what I can to to improve the sound of both. Thinking of taking the Sigma for a proper set-up. Anyone recomend anyone or should I just go to see Phillipe?

I was wondering about something a bit more drastic like shaving the top and scalloping or moving braces? I know that probably doesn't make economic sense but the guitar was a gift from a departed friend so I'm never going to part with it. I just wish it sounded a bit better. Are the gains from this sort of operation going to be noticeable?

The Guild I guess I'll just go up a gauge of string and keep playing it. It is what it is.

  • Have you done all the usual shit like replacing the saddle, bridge pins, nut with something decent?

I'd do that before drastic carpentry. God knows how much that would cost or if the luthier would even want to. He'd most likely want to replace the top and braces, which is crazy but at least you'd get a clear tonal improvement (provided the wood and workmanship was good).

Or buy a newer used Gibson and play it for 8-10 years then you'll have what you desire.
I bought my 2000 L00 in 2002 and although it easily blew away all the builder's bum alternatives (taks, yammys, s&ps etc) it sounded even better when I put in ebony bridge pins and a buffalo horn saddle. After a decade of playing and just existing, it sounded even more excellenter.

  • Yeah I know it's a crazy idea really. The top is the best bit I think so I can't see the logic of replacing that. It's a well cared for but well played 1980s D28 copy. Solid spruce top and (I think) laminate rosewood back and sides. Guess i'll just stick to the usual set-up and new nut, pins and saddle. Then start saving for that Gibbo.

  • What strings do you use btw?

I know everyone has their preference for whatever reason but all the 'usual' acoustic strings go very dead very quickly in my hands. I can't and won't use anything other than Thomastik Spectrums. Even if you're settled with a brand and haven't tried these, I urge you to.

Could do with some recs for electric, always used a combo of whatevers/EBs but the last pack of EBs I opened had black corrosion on the unwounds. Supposed to be sealed but I guess the shelf life is a thing.
Have some Newtones which I'm going to try next. Never liked Dds or Elixir or anything coated(!)

  • I'm about to pick up some Elixirs, tell me why I shouldn't...

  • I've also decided I need a white SG Melody Maker to match the other one... So cute...

  • I actually like older slightly duller (but not totally dead) strings and change them so infrequently these days that I never have any idea what ones I've got on. Add to that the old habit of stocking up on strings every time I pass a music shop (a hangover from the days I played punk telecaster and I'd change them before every gig, sometimes twice or more a week) I have drawers full of unopened sets of strings.

I have loads of elixirs and I think they're pretty good although they are duller than uncoated strings straight out of the pack (which I like) they tend to stay in that nicely played in window without going totally dead far far longer than regular strings. I likey.

I also really liked these Martin XP "extended play" Strings that weren't completely coated but seemed to last a bit longer than regulars too. Can't often find them tho.

Electric, I've tried everything under the sun from cryogenically frozen whatnots in the 90s to hand made Rotosounds and DRs. I've gone back to bog standards Ernie Balls 10s.

  • You clearly have too much money.

    Buy me an amp?

  • They were going out at US$300 before they ran out of stock... Not really a big ticket guitar...

    Buy me a house!

  • I've actually just seen a house I really like so silly spending is out right now...

  • Don't know if it's the same with guitars as it is with basses, but I prefer nickel bass strings, not as bright as stainless at the start, but keep that mellower tone for much longer. My current set of bass strings (elites nickel) have been on there a couple of years and still sound good. Got a spare set waiting to go on but haven't found it necessary yet.

  • That's ridiculous! For the Gibson not Epiphone? Surely not US made?

  • 300 bucks for a gibson? That' nuts.

  • That 2011/12 line of MMs was super cheap, I got the white LP (that Joe stole away to Australia) from Thomman for not much more than he paid for it but less than they seem to go for on eBay when they ocasionally come up.
Would have kept it but everything had to go for the big move to the little flat.

Never understood why so many people use and recommend elixir acoustic strings. The coating comes off in minutes with my hard old fingers. I thought it must be some kind of in-joke.
Al, try the Spectrums. They start off sounding like worn in 'normal' strings but stay like it for ages. Expensive but worth it in my view. They're really not just another bronze wound string. I'd be surprised if you didn't like them, very surprised.

  • Eeexcellent. I'll give them a try thanks man. Yeah Elixirs are what I always end up buying because that's all that everyone seems to have. I seem to recall using these ones on which the wrap wire was coated before winding round the core, that that they seemed less plasticky and more natural feeling... but I'm buggered if I can remember what they were.

  • I found elixirs to be a load of old shit. Can't understand why people like them, they went hairy and fluffy (both bridge and neck) within a handful of hours playing, I returned them and they sent me more, which did exactly the same. Anyone recommending them must either be having a laugh or have the fingers of a trundling nymphette.

If you are the latter give me a call (not you, @snottyotter , not after last time)

  • There's an Explorer and a V in the series as well, might have to do the whole set... They're THAT good!!

  • So this just turned up... #Krautrock band forming in 3, 2, 1...

  • Whoa. Post some clips.

  • Sold the Deluxe Reverb to a young jazz guitarist who plays a '56 Gibson archtop and made it sound amazing.

Battered '77 Silverface Champ on the way for less than half what I sold the DR for.

Fingers crossed but this could be a great swap.

  • Champs are great, you'll love it...

  • I use Martin silk & steel strings. Dunno why, just do. Nice and twangy.
