  • Does it just turn off with no warning? Used to happen to me, I'd look down and it would have stopped working and the screen would be blank. I was using OSM. Since coughing up for the "real" maps about 6 weeks ago and doing a reset it's been fine (touch wood)

  • Check out my posts on the previous page. Had the same issue with osm on an 810, returned the device and the 2nd was the same. Garmin advised they wouldn't provide support as it was the third party maps causing the problem.

I ended up returning the 2nd device and just buying a 3rd unit with the official maps bundled.

Had it about a month and no issues, I know @hippy also had a similar experience.

Where did you get yours from? Do they have a good returns policy? As I recall, I only ended up paying 30 quid extra from amazon to have the official maps, and it is also really nice to be able to search locations by postcode. Really handy for navigating on the fly, especially in london

  • Gah what a PITA. Do you mind if I ask how much you paid for the bundle? (or did you just buy maps on an SD card)

Further question - does anyone know how up to date the current maps are? this http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000L3APBK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3DY1ULX0WPWJW
seems cheap cheap, but then is only 2012 which seems a bit old. Are there more up to date versions?

  • I bought Garmin Edge 810 GPS Bike Computer with Heart Rate Monitor and Speed/Cadence Sensor and City Navigator Street Maps For Europe https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00B06K5UI/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_eN6VvbEAPJ6CK which has gone down by 15 quid since I bought it, and is only 5 quid more than the unit without maps now. My unit came with 2014 maps on an sd card. Would recommend going for that if you're able to return your previous unit to the retailer

  • For the record I'm using Garmin maps purchased separately to the unit itself.

  • Ah, I don't need the rest of that pack, and even if I buy a SD card of maps it'll work out a bit cheaper. Although looks cheap for the whole of Europe I guess.

  • I had one switch off and one freeze that required a reboot, both during navigation with OSM loaded.

I then moved to Garmin NT (USA and Europe, on separate cards) and have had no issues since.

Only caveat is that I suspect the sample size is a bit small to prove the point, but anecdotally the official maps seem to fix the issue.

I bought the USA map as a download - would not do that again as it was a massive ball-ache, the download took forever over a 100 Mbps line. It was like dial-up.

Europe maps I got on the Micro-SD card, significantly more convenient.

  • cheers for sharing that, ive been looking via wiggle/evans etc and this is loads cheaper

  • So my 800 has started playing up on my last two rides. Both were above 100 miles and have corupted somehow. I have finished ride, used lap/reset button as usual, and when I have connected with Garmin Express to upload the file has no data, but still shows the distance and time on the history screen.

It was giving me some grief on Saturday morning, and pausing when I was moving, I reset it turning off cadence sensor etc and it seemed to carry on working fine.

Has anyone had anything similar or have any suggestions?

  • Yes I have. While the ride from Albertville to St Jean de Maurienne via Glandon and Croix de Fer last year I must have somehow deleted on the Garmin I have repaired maybe one ride out of three or five failed. Do not ask me how and which tool.

  • Cheers will take a look, bit worried about future rides, might back up the next few by recording on my phone too

  • I have one of these which would make a decent backup device http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004BBD1QE I use it for GPS tagging photos and had no issues. It's about the size of a big USB flash drive.

  • Ta and ^ ta.

Will it still be able to make a route from a location that I input on the unit itself?

  • To a location? If I give postcode for work in the morning Garmin always gets me there ;-)

  • Same with home in the evening.

  • Rerouting off.

  • Yes. It'll just stop it from trying to recalculate the route if it thinks you've gone off course.

  • Does anyone know how long the battery in the HM, cadence and speed sensor should last for? I've brought mine about a month and both seems like they're dead/not working anymore.

  • They are temperamental. Follow the manual.

  • Mine's about 2 years old and still going.

  • Despite the latest update of Garmin Connect in the Apple AppStore offering 'Bluetooth pairing and syncing fixes', it still doesn't work.

  • lol, Garmin updates.
