  • The triple is cheaper (by 20 euros) than the double. I like the idea of having more gears. Can't really think of a reason to spend more money on fewer?

And yes - I will buy very very soon. Got distracted by a new bike, work, and a bit of a tour earlier this month.

  • It's not so much having fewer gears, as having more useable gears.

  • Can't really think of a reason to spend more money on fewer?

The double crank has a smaller Q?

  • More reasons for it to be cheaper! Less material!

Anyway, I'm happy with a triple. And I've ordered it now. And I'm very excite.

  • Triple is deeply unfashionable but also deeply practical esp if you like long rides with long climbs and connecting tarmac.

  • Ive been riding a triple on a rented MTB while on holiday in Greece. Having a bottom gear of about 10 inches far outweighs any low q-factor bullshit when doing 30% gradient on loose rocks and gravel

  • I have a double on my bouncy bike, and a triple on the rigid.....both are better than riding 26" wheels!

  • Ecr fork gone on the transition.... Then, when a 3.0 tyre goes on, the geo should be spot on :0)

  • You decided to get a 468mm fork, rather than the 483mm Krampus then?

  • Wheels and headset arrived. Doing a bit of touch up painting on the Karate Monkey. Just waiting for the groupset. Excite!

  • .. .nm

  • Assuming you mean this type, they seem to be in stock at CRC.

Shimano IS - Post Front 180

  • Ah, too late...

  • Yeah, they seem to have different ones listed (one of which was saying out of stock earlier). Anyway, got it, and happy. Grabbed some Stans No Tubes sealant as well.

  • It's one of those wretchedly simple little components that has me staring at it in the basket for ages, thinking "THIS IS DEFINITELY THE CORRECT ONE, YES?" :-)

  • Just brought my self one of these, Trek superfly 6. I have nothing bad to say so far!

  • Yes mate, partly due to the extra height that will be created with the bigger tyre, and partly due to my cheapness......I was waiting for the 31st, when triton would have the krampus with anything mounts in stock, but this popped up on singletrack for cheaps, and I was under the influence of Henry westons finest vintage cider......boom! I was in, like the proverbial Flynn!
It looks better though, and handles very well :0) it won't be a drama if I try a 3.0 tyre and its shite, as I'll happily switch back to this 2.4 :0)

  • it won't be a drama if I try a 3.0 tyre and its shite

Can't see there being a problem. Are you getting a Surly Knard or a Maxxis Chronicle? Think I'd choose the latter.

  • Depends what I find for the cheapest moniez.....I'm in no rush, as im going to try it on my current rim before admitting to myself that it's shite, and getting a dually or hugo....or blunt at a push!

  • I have a lightly used folding Knard sat somewhere in the back of my wardrobe... Will I use it again... Hmmm....

  • Hopefully I'll have a new groupset delivered tomorrow. The last thing I'm worried about: the bars I've got are perhaps a bit narrow by MTB standards (55cm or so). Wider by road standards. Seeing all sorts of crazy advice out there, but lots saying slightly more narrow on a 29er than other MTB setups. What do people think here?

  • I like my bars wide, but it's personal preference I guess.

one thing to consider is that if they are too narrow, it will make strapping a bar bag/harness for bikepacking a pain with too many cables/hoses in the way.

I have some Salsa Bend 2 bars if you're interested

  • Hmm. Cool. I guess I'll just ride them and see. Swapping bars isn't too bad on an MTB (fuck bar tape). But I think the combo of a triple chain-ring setup and narrow bars will make me the coolest kid on an MTB.

And maybe re: bars. How much would you want for them, and when will I see you next? Why aren't you using them? Worried the swoop bar will be awkward on the wrists.

  • It's not 19bloody89, ditch those 55cm bars and get some >700mm bars pronto.
