  • They'll all be off the bike this week, tapering ;-)

  • @TTM

    Ah yes, of course!

They've been reading the Cycling Plus articles and are tapering, carb-loading and fitting their compacts for the mighty ascent of box hill.

  • I shall be tapering from Saturday lunch, have a few errands to run in the morning.

  • I'll be tapering this week by stopping at the pub halfway through my 11mile commute each evening.

  • This evening I shall be doing a last minute training ride up Swains Lane, followed by a bit of tapering at Norths.

  • I'll be tapering from now until next year - got hit by a car on my commute and can no longer cycle :'(

  • The longest ride I've ever done was last night and it was around 40-45 miles. This would be my first ever cycling sportive!

My phone ran out of battery, so it cut out probably just under 6-8 miles. My bum was hurting and legs were cramping all over near the end which worries me about covering the mileage. However as for climbing hills, I'm a bit more confident.

  • Ooof, sorry to hear that @colin122 heal up fast.

@CMBK you'll be fine, just make sure you don't go off too fast from the start. Unless you're on a really early start here will be plenty of people rolling at all different paces, just find a group who's pace you're comfortable with, introduce yourself and roll with them.

  • Cool thanks and will do! :) 6:30 am start.

  • tubs for this event? what is the point? what marginal gains are you surely going to get out of that? the upside to me seems fairly minimal, the downsides pretty big.
lost count of the guys in my group last year and the year before say 'he is out due to flat tub'

  • Sorry to hear that and heal fast. I got hit by a caravan 4 weeks ago (fractured hip etc) and have another 6-8 weeks before properly walking again.

I did the Ride London last year - good fun but no desire to do it again. Hope you all enjoy yourselves.

  • tubs for this event? what is the point?

    Sportives are srs business tho!

  • I used tubs in 2013, didn't die, got to enjoy the ride quality and (much more importantly) the nice rumbling noise of deep carbon. That said, I ruined myself.

  • My start time is 6.06 - are the earlier time slots designed for faster riders or is it random?
I put down estimated finish of about 6 hrs so I'm not fast.

Did 4.50 last year (but was 14 miles short of course).

Do I face on Sunday being passed from the word go?!

  • I gave the same estimated time and am starting at 6:12 so we'll both be getting passed together.

  • Can anyone recommend a wireless cycling computer, just want to know speed, time, distance, the basics.

  • tubs for this event? what is the point?

    1) It's summer
    2) You want to use your favourite wheels
    3) Your favourite wheels are not clinchers

  • I would just go and buy an Edge 200 - some online shops have it for £70, Amazon £75.

  • Download Strava on your phone.
Take your phone on the ride.

  • Weather looks nice for it.

  • Secure it firmly.

Saw one poor bastards phone bounce out of his mount and smash into pieces on the A12 within about 2 minutes of the start.

  • I put 6 hrs down and got an 08:42 start, where as last year I put down 8 hrs and got a 07:32 start.

  • In your pocket no...?

That is assuming @CMBK just wants to record his performance, rather then receive real time on screen feedback and change performance accordingly.

  • I already use strava, but that's probably won't last 6-8 hours of battery knowing the iPhone aha!

Precisely @WjPrince! Want the real time feedback. Cheers @iltmimi, I'm looking at the Garmin Edge 200 now, any other recommendations?

  • Turn data off on your phone before you start the app, GPS doesn't need it so you should get a shitload more battery time out of it.
