  • why not sizing up to 294?

  • It's better to be a touch short than too long and run out of threads.

  • allright, thanks!

  • i'd like to re-use the spokes

Don't, they'll be stretched and fatigued.

Cyclebasket sell ACI DB spokes for £0.21 each.

  • Don't

You're disagreeing with Jobst* here. Not that I haven't done so myself on occasion, but you'd better be absolutely sure of your ground.

  • It's a polo wheel anyway, they'll break from impacts and abuse before fatigue.

  • i'm located in germany so i need a german shop :/

  • Don't think so I checked them first as they're cheaper.

  • Bah, I've reused spokes and it was fine

(36 spoke wheel, not abuse, I'm not heavy and of course no massive rub marks)

  • Question: Spoke calc tells me I need 293.5 mm
Only length available for cheaps (it's for the Miche winter wheels once the salt comes out so don't feel like spending a fortune) is 294.

Is 0.5 really a big issue? The consensus is to round down I noticed. It's for Mavic Open Sport rims.

  • Has anyone tried lacing any second spoke, If someone had a 36h laced front wheel could the lace it again with 18 spokes?

  • The offset between the left and right hub drillings would be wrong unless you used an 18H hub, and if your rim has its eyelets off-centre or angled, the rim's not suitable for skip-lacing.

  • Ok thanks

  • I recently to attempted to service my slightly grindy sounding Campagnolo 8 speed hub, and managed to essentially destory the assembly. It looks like I need to replace the 8 speed hub, which is annoying and expensive.

I'd like to keep using the 90s era 36h Melbourne 56 rim on a future build; so my noob question is, can I switch out the damaged 8 speed hub with a track or flip flop hub?

  • Of course, but you will need to get new spokes :)

The length may not match as the hub will have a different height/width, and a single speed hub won't have offset, so the spokes are the same length and right.

Perhaps you get lucky and you can re-use half of the spokes, but as there's offset on the 8-speed and not on the single speed unlikely you can re-use all.

  • Thanks, I figured I'd need new spokes. The issue now is: is the cost of hub(s), spokes, and labour, more or less cost effective than selling these and using that towards a new wheel set. Decisions.

  • You're looking £100-150 for not cheap n nasty fixed wheels whatever you do (V-sprint, cycleclinic, (both uk built) halo/miche/planet x (if they still use Novatec) in sale (machine built)

However, if you can get a used hub on EvilBay it's only labour (unless the spokes are that worn the shop advices against rebuilding) :)

SJS has Alpina spokes that are supposed to be a good budget bet, Sapim/DT Swiss come recommended but never are cheap.

  • SJS has Alpina spokes

Only in gross boxes, AFAIK. Cyclebasket is the usual source for ACI/Alpina spokes.

  • So, spoke calculators: Is there one calculator to rule them all, or really, you can't fully trust the ones with pre-loaded rims/hubs and you better measure yourself?

I'm getting a difference between http://www.prowheelbuilder.com/spokelengthcalculator and https://leonard.io/edd/ for the same rim and hubs. (Miche primato hub, front, Mavic Open sport erd 606, 32 spokes, 3 cross)

Prowheelbuilder: Left spoke length: 294.7 / Right spoke length: 294.7
Leonard: Spoke length left 293.5 mm / Spoke length right 293.5 mm

So that's a 1.2 mm difference...I've no idea who is right and have to get spokes :)

    Also did: http://www.wheelpro.co.uk/spokecalc/
    293.3
    DT Swiss
    293.5
Sapim, bit more awkward as you need to input rim diameter with value 1.5
    294.5

  • I've used Edd and DT Swiss before, and they are usually < 1mm difference, and have not had any issues. But caveat emptor

    edit: @JWestland

  • So me being the idiot that I am comically got the bin bag I was carrying jammed in my front wheel whilst rolling along to the communial dumpster area. It was a slow speed affair luckily.

Anyways, upon unjamming, wheel is no longer true. Seems that one of the spokes managed to lose a large amount of tension. Probably 3 full nipple turns worth. Could a nipple really unwind this much from previously described event? Or has the spoke stretched and thus ready to explode? I checked the hub flange which doesn't show any damage.

For reference, 20 spoke wheel, cx rays, radial.

  • CSB. Spotting Pete Doherty was when my umbrella went into my wheel.

  • If it's owt like getting a polo ball twatted at it they seem to pull through the threads of the nipple but work alright when retightened, although I've never studied this closely.
