That's what I did. Though I then had trouble making the USB and ended up using the recovery partition to roll back to Mountain Lion and upgraded to Yosemite from that. That involved downloading too, so there's not much way around it.

OK, my internet connection ain't the greatest so I'll probably leave it overnight to do it.

Had no problems with El Capitan apart from flux. Do it.

I'm enjoying El Capitan, particularly the twin fullscreen, though there are some things I'd like changed.
The two-up split view for apps is great, although it could benefit from 3 or 4 up view in a grid and maybe a horizontal format option. Also, responsive, complex websites such as youtube seem to get confused about the DOM width and break when viewed in this mode with Chrome or Safari. Not necessarily an Apple issue but obviously a discrepancy someone will have to look at.
The minimising menubar is useful a small screen, but its inconsistent, and it overlaps/obscures apps or pushes them down after which they don't return. It bugs me because it feels glitchy. Although, when in fullscreen mode, this doesn't happen. The pop-out is much more elegant, moving just the toolbar the app with it and returning it smoothly after.
Spotlight is meh. I understand the more colloquial search, but its useless without Siri. Why would I type long colloquial search terms? I'm guessing this is Apple taking baby steps, preparing to introduce Siri to spotlight proper, which could actually be quite useful.
Why is there no obvious way to open a Spotlight item in finder? I always forget the hotkey. Y U NO rightclick/cmdclick context menu item "show in finder"? Y U NO CONTEXT MENU AT ALL??!Being able to move the window around is no big deal for me, and I assumed this would already be possible.. not sure why its listed as a new feature as opposed to a correction!
The Mission Control thing is basically the same except the desktop thumbs at the top start off minimised and duplicate program instances aren't stacked. I use it all the time.
The fullscreen composing in Mail is much better, basically as it always should have been. I haven't fiddled with anything else in Mail beyond swiping to delete, which is... well I don't know why it exists, since the delete key is faster.
I don't use Photos, Safari or Maps. I hear maps has public transport now. Woop de doo.
I cant detect any speed change on either of my machines, but that doesn't mean it isn't there.

I have an old iMac G5 17" with a PowerPC processor, so pre-Intel, bought 10 years ago and running, I think Leopard, so OS X 10.5 that I no longer have any use for.
It still works so if anyone has a usage for it PM me and you can have it.

It has Shellac on it whereas Spotify doesn't, so thumbs up from me.

I clicked follow on an artist, this doesn't seem to have made that band any easier to find or made any kind of change at all.

I can only add albums to My Music, not artists. And if I go to search I get 10 suggested trending artists but only 6 of my own searches.

Gonna bring my dead mbp home in October (mid2010 model I believe). Anybody want it for spares/repairs? The logic board is unequivocally f-ed sadly, and I know that's the valuable bit, and I want to keep the hard drive. I'm not sure if any of the rest of it is worth anything to anyone, but will gladly trade for bike bits, home-made jams, chutneys or pickles, or an apple wireless keyboard/mouse if it's of use to anyone.

banging my head on wall with this .. need to make a bootable OSX usb drive using windows. I tried several DMG files of different versions of OSX; used transmac to make bootable USB drive but no dice. I have no access to a mac otherwise its a very straightforward process using disk utility.
Anyone had similar issues? Can I borrow someone's mac for 30 mins tomorrow?
