    Different width tyres? Different pressures? Different compounds?

    Answering a different question, one common method for dealing with a worn rear tyre is moving the current front tyre to the rear and putting a new tyre on the front. That way the front always has a relatively new tyre (and therefore good grip). It is a bit of a faff though.
