Front end of the field is a proper race. There are fully paid for teams racing. Bonuses awarded for wins and stuff. It's more like Kermesse racing in Belgium than Dragon Ride or something.
I think they've cleaned it up a bit, but ten years ago the front of the field was full of ex-pros who'd been busted for doping. Rumsas, 3rd in the Tour, spent many years riding them on a wage (plus decent prize money).
Yeah, that was what prompted his ultra exploits. Back when I met him he was on a team doing Gran Fondos for cashmoneyyo.
