My dad had an awesome Claud butler 531 lugged mtb, with full deore LX... must have been a 91 or 92 model. We didn't think much of it once we had "proper" mountain bikes and gave it away to family, might try and retrieve it.

I'm wondering about changing to carbon
Why? It's not the post material that's causing the click, it's the rail clamp design.
Are you looking for straight or set back? What diameter? What length?

Ah yeah... 27.2, 330mm with about 25 mm setback.
You're quite right about the clamp design being the issue, just thought if I was spending money to get a new post I might as well look for carbon

You say this, but you also say this:
without breaking the bank
Which is it to be? Cheap carbon posts are a waste of money, often heavier than aluminium, usually with shit clamp designs and always with the clamp glued to the tube, a potential point of failure.
Pro Vibe 7S is a good mid-price option, a good 100g lighter than my usual suggestion of "stop being a weight weenie and get a Kalloy SP-248" :-)

That does look like a good option - I was looking at £100 carbon like Fizik cyrano R1 which actually quotes a larger weight...

No probs, trawl through (German, less expensive) ebay for "retro mtb" and google the ones you think look cool. Also check retrobike. I knew fuck all about mtbs six weeks ago, had one in the 90s but that's it. Still managed to scrape together parts for a build with not much trouble. Sizing was the hardest bit to get my head round, being an anal roadie mamil and used to agonising over 5 mm here and there (all euphs obvs) it's nice to have someone tell you it's not a big deal and just get this or that frame size in inches.

New stem day.
Oh, and talk to the source (Agnieszka Godras) and it turns out the frame not only won Polish Championship but was also raced at World Cup and World Championships between 1992 and 1996. Quite stoked about it.

Did retromtb. Mtbmx was not being ridden and too short. Put on some wheels from dicki and changed stem bars. 8spd cassette with one removed and friction thumby.

Off we go, I'm thinking:
Black rims/hubs/spokes
Aero style fork (this one can't be drilled for a brake)It has a 1" HT, a 28 mm fork rake to make things a little more challenging ;)

you could get one of those rad aero giant carbon forks on marktplaats. they do yellow black grey ones too and not too spensive.
What's the go-to Carbon seatpost these days? I cannot get my stock alu one to stop clicking with a romin on board and I'm wondering about changing to carbon. Current post is 300g so I'd want to shave some weight without breaking the bank.
