  • Have you considered gym/strength work?

I'm having to swallow the bullet and accept that no matter how much stretching and rolling I do, I need to get proactive with the conditionig to sort my knees (well, mainly the left one)

As well as the obvious bar squats (will go mid weight high rep) I'll be working on one legged squats/dips, lunges, leg presses (1 and 2 legged), and some other bits and bats, working on posture and general strength.

I may be wrong but I think for anyone with bad knees, strength and conditioning should have a positive impact.

  • But I'm trying to get rid of the extra weight by cycling ;)

  • I'm actually going to the gym once a week. I do light squats (high rep) on a machine because manual squatting without weights is nearly impossible.

Strength and conditioning is a positive impact indeed.

  • Where in Shoreditch can I walk in and buy a new unlocked phone today?

  • A girl in the office keeps referring to 'Freshies'. She is the third generation of migrants: her grandparents migrated to the UK from India.

    Is she being racist?

  • Is there a modern 120mm spaced singlespeed coaster brake hub?
Or have these rightfully died out?
Nearest I can come up with is the Sturmey-Archer S2 and it's twospeed not singlespeed...

  • Solved.

  • Yes... well it depends what you mean by modern.

Are you in London? If so BikeFix on Lambs Conduit st. used to have a decent one for c.£20. 36h, steel body and SA-style cogs. Mine worked well for a year or so of regular use, then I stopped using it and sold the wheel.

  • Carphone Warehouse, (not a recommendation) claim their phones are unlocked.

  • 'Freshies'

Depends what it's in relation to.

She means "Fresh off the Boat". It's faster and less formal than saying "newly/recently emigrated people from the Indian sub-continent" so doesn't have to have a negative inference. But in my experience the Indians I have encountered use it with clear subtext of being backwards and less cultured (they were all second generation fwiw).

But imo that's more a class related issue than racist like say Indians using the word Paki in a negative, but claiming that it is a reclamation of a word used against them like nigger.

  • Ok, thanks.

There was definitely a negative subtext to when she said it today, and she's generally rather materialistic, so I had an idea that it would be more to do with cultural capital than race but wasn't sure.

  • Shimano's offering seems to currently be the better of the new hubs out there; not made for hard use but it's quality is better than the aesthetics imply.

  • I'm having to swallow the bullet

"Bite the bullet" or "Swallow my pride"?

  • A Dutch bike also discouraged you from pushing it too far, thus less fragile on the knees.

  • ^^

  • Having gammy joints myself, extensive knee and hip injuries, one which will require major surgery later this year - I very much know what you are going through.

But as Ive had these problems since 2008, and taken a strong interest in rehabilitative/prehabilitative exercise, Ive become fairly adept at addressing this sort of thing and modifying training protocols to cater for injuries and limitations.

So if you need a hand, a bit of advice or whatevs. Give me a shout.

  • @hugo7 , @withered_preacher : Thanks!
The Shimano one looks solid and it's cheap too. I think I can just try that one out.

But are there any other offerings? Black, 32h, high-flange, obnoxiously loud?

  • Also, that was a tough pride to swallow.

  • So if you need a hand

I think he was having knee problems ...

  • Happy endings come in all forms.

  • True, but I would like to get to work a little faster....

  • That sounds painful. I've had bad knees since before 2008. Was from 2005 if I remember. Had something to do with a car that came out of a side street (I had right of way) and waking up on the street with a concussion and bad knees. I'll give you a shout in PM.

I used to be a cyclist just like you, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

  • Yeah I do the lips thing too... Nothing!

Also as this is a fixy skidder forum there must be a thread about knee pain by now?
