  • Look mum no hands.. Is that any good? Or others?

Cyclelab. Yours is the bent RS80, right? Is the rim particularly out of true when rotated? Does it have a flat spot? It might be that you'd have to do wild things to the tension in the spokes to get it near-true again which would make for an unreliable wheel. As replacement rims are pricey it might well be beyond economic repair. But yeah get someone to look at it again if its not obvious.

  • I'm surprised the plate serves any purpose other than to stop you fitting the cranks in the wrong position.

Yeah it's not obvious really. I think it can prevent over tightening of the pinch bolts too.

I had an XT arm come loose - it wandered down the spindle pushing the preload bolt out as it went until the pin stopped it. Maybe :) Pushed it back on, re-torqued it and it's been fine ever since.

  • Yours is the bent RS80, right?

Any kind of bend in an RS80 rim means it's dead. The carbon might be delaminated from the aluminium base, so it could explode and kill thousands of innocent bystanders at any moment. As stated, RS80 rims are actually more expensive than complete wheels due to the different discount structures, so a dead rim is a dead wheel.

  • Ok I give up, what's with the sniggering about "vintage suspension" that pops up in all sorts of different threads? Have been wondering for months but am apparently a bit thick.

  • It's a meme from the [anti]porn thread, like grey bar tape.

  • Anyone ever had a chainstay dented before? or can someone recommend a shop/framebuilder that might be able to do it? Chainring strikes when cranks are halfway-3/4 way inserted :s

  • vintage suspension.

What's a good yet affordable bubbly rosé? It's not meant to be a show off, so if there is a decent supermarket brand one then I'd be perfectly happy to get that.

  • How would I go about finding a slow puncture that is so slow it doesn't produce bubbles underwater?

(Takes about three days to go from fully inflated to pinch flat danger)

  • I'd just fuck it off and get a new tube, probably.

  • needs grey bartape

  • Pop a pinch of stans sealant in it. Job done.

  • Pump it up, then pump it even more so it look like it belong to a 36ers.

If there's nothing, perhaps a faulty valve might be the culprit.

  • At the very least it'll make hole bigger :)

@Itisaboutthebike done, and bought a spare... But bloody going fix it...

  • I've always been able to find the hole. Ahem. Even those sneaky only-just-a-hole holes, that look like a little scuff. Sounds odd but I pump the tube up a bit and use my mouth and lips to feel for escaping air.

But yeah, but a new one..

  • Hi

Thanks, yeah I have the bent RS81s... What is a flat spot :( Actually took it to Look mum no hands (as didn't see ur reply in time) and they retuned all the spokes and showed me that the wheel was still slightly untrue.. So not completely straight.... Also not 100% round as 1 little area bumps out slightly. He didn't charge me anything and said that it should be fine to ride, but you may (psychologically) feel a difference. Is he right in saying it's okay to ride? Seemed like a nice mechanic.

  • :( the mechanic said at the shop for them to rebuild the wheel it will cost around £100, £50 labour and £50 for parts etc.... Would that sort the wheel out? Or the aforementioned bend of doom on RS81s are just unfixable.

  • Trust the mechanic at LMNH who has actually seen it, or some randoms off the internet?! Sounds like it probably won't fall apart on you, but you'd be better off getting a new wheel.

  • the mechanic said at the shop for them to rebuild the wheel it will cost around £100, £50 labour and £50 for parts etc

Which mechanic? Either he doesn't know what he's looking at, or he has a source of Shimano carbon laminate rims at £50. Either way, we need his name, to avoid him at all costs or to get him to hook up all the people with busted RS80/RS81/7450/9000 carbon laminate wheels who have hitherto been shuddering at the thought of paying £150+ for a rim.

Apparently, Cole C24 is a drop-in replacement for the Shimano C24 rim if you just want to get your wheel up and running for cheap at the expense of a bit more weight and a bit less rigidity.

  • Ok, after two knee surgery's and months of therapy, I can tell you that my knees just suck. Even cycling to work can be too much. I was thinking about selling some bikes and buying an electric bike so I can at least go to work on a bicycle. Are there cheap but still good e-bikes?

  • Cheap as in a grand?

    Best get a Dutch bike.

  • I said an e-bike. A granny bike / Dutch bike is more like 50 pounds and not electric. Single trip is about 45 minutes on a road bike.

  • ^^An electric Dutch bike?
Going more slowly might help the knees, maybe the position could help too, that'll probably be offset by pushing a load of extra weight around though.
