  • Well, I got to compare the iMac and iMac 5k side by side. And I'm still no closer to a decision. There is a definite difference and looking closely it becomes apparent, but really it's only very minor and for anything other than serious 4k video editing, I can't see that it'd make any difference.

Saying that, now that I've seen it, would I pay the £350-400 premium over a non-5k iMac? Yeah, I would. The question is, would I pay the £800-900 premium over the PC equivalent of the non-5k iMac? Highly unlikely. But then for that £900 extra, you get the rest of the benefits of having a Mac, so I'm still on the fence.

  • Retina iMac. Do it!

  • thought you were gonna take up my offer? I was looking forward to that pint you promised! lol Is it really that much cheaper??

  • Oh chances are I still will! For an iMac. There's still a pint with your name in it! Going to build an egpu to test our first though. And yep. I'll double check. Think the MacBook is £950.

  • yay!!! But I am afraid I will have to be the party pooper as I have stopped drinking alcohol end of last year. I like a good coffee though!

On a serious note, do we think 4GB on the air is enough for a kick about laptop? Or would it just be a glorified iPad with a physical keyboard?

  • The keyboard on the MacBook is very different. You may like it or loathe it. Definitely worth trying out before buying.

  • Sh/t! My fairly old MBP (2010/11) just went nuts while doing routine email check. All normal til I heard a click (sounded quiet & mechanical) screen went pitch black and computer did not respond... Now, when restarting, screen has weird color (purple greenish tones) and is all cross with horizontal stripes. Several attempts and all I can see is the apple logo (faded colors and stripes) followed by an empty screen (Light grey/blue) with crazy fan action!
    What's going on? Any clues?

  • Please excuse the crap phone photo. Any chance of it being something I can fix myself? Have some basic knowledge of electronics and some tools

  • Most likely the graphics card failed. If the model is early or late 2011, apple will repair it for free

  • Sounds like a GPU failure, which was a common problem with 2011 MBPs. Check repair link above^. Hopefully that covers you.

  • I've just bought a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15", medio 2014) earlier this year, becuase my old one died. But now it has started to make this "burb" sound once in a while. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with any usage of any programs etc. Once it starts it will "burb" once every 30sek and only stop if I kill the sound (so i guess it's a speaker/sound card problem?) or restart the system...

    Any suggestion to fix this?

  • Luckily! Early 2011.thanks for your help @ExTra

  • Another thing, if you are near any of the apple store, don't bother with trying to make an appointment, just go there, ideally at a quieter time, i.e early morning or early evening, and said you need the machine fixed urgently.

  • @havSerial @bikes_knob Serial No says it's a early 2011 model. Shall I take it to an apple store or an authorised repair center will do? Are both equally likely to do repair for free if the Mac is faulty?

  • SW9 shall I go central for an apple store or check a local authorised repair center?

  • you would have to get an approval from apple before you can get it repaired for free at an authorised place and calling AppleCare is an absolutely pain at the back side. Believe me, everyone on this thread know I am now an expert in dealing with Apple and a Mac machines pooper. Just go to one of the Apple store if you have the time and insist of being seen while you are there.

  • Yeah, echoing the above advice; take it to an Apple shop, early in the morning.

  • Ordered a new battery for Le iPhone from fleabay. Cost 7 quid and seemed like one of the more reputable sellers.

Kinda missing my nexus 5 😞

  • Just been to Regent's and told me to come back tomorrow at 10. Thanks everyone!I'll keep you posted

  • yeah, but you're paying for those ghz..

  • The guts can't push the pixels on the 5k. If you're doing any kind of editing that requires the extra real estate (HD video), then you probably also require some graphical processing overhead... the 5k iMac just isn't capable of that without melting yet. As with the Macbook.. 1st gen is a bad move.

  • Not sure what i'd do with a laptop that has no USB ports on tour. Carry plug adapters for all my equipment? Rely on wifi? non non non

  • You sound like you have real issues with Apple stuff, maybe you should just switch to PC's?

I never connect anything to my MacBook Pro apart from a Thunderbolt Display. Why would others want more ports?

  • I kind of agree with @7Üp. Current iMacs in standard form are a little glitchy and they get immensely hot. Not sure if it's software or hardware but they do suffer slowdown, freezes etc. I can't imagine the 5k will fair much better doing intensive work. I imagine the macbook is the same. That said, the pro I was using last week did stutter quite a bit. And that was fairly loaded with RAM and processors.

MBP on the other hand - fast and good. best machine in the lineup.

But, if I were in the need for portable as prime concern I know I wouldn't be able to resist a space grey Macbook. Probably would buy a 5k iMac too, cause they are amazing to look at (screen wise). So don't listen to me!
