  • The projector fucking rules btw! Been talking about getting one for about 6 years. Never bought a TV in my life.

  • Snagging lists exist for a reason and keep some of the money until it's sorted.

  • My plans are for the TV to be mounted to the chimney breast with a false wall in front flush with the TV screen and centre speaker. All the cables can hide in that, the AV kit can live in a cupboard in one of the alcoves and everything will look swish. Anyone see any problems with this?

  • Won't it get scorched come winter when you light the fire?

  • the cables go up through the mount into the ceiling and come out at the back wall alcove where we're going to build a bar/AV centre storage thing. You can also plug things into the back of it as normal, it's got various inputs.

  • Gonna be tricky as it's bricked up

  • Try jet fuel, burns through brick, steel beams and plasterboard.

  • Try jet fuel, burns through brick, dank steel beams and plasterboard.

    ftfy

  • Woo! Got our valuation back for the remortgage. Exact amount we put down (I don't think that they ever go over what you've said you think it might be worth though). Extension planning continues.

  • Decided on birch plywood worktops with formica surfaces ala:-

Wife (an interior designer) says formica must be matte and plain colour (she wants light grey) because formica only looks modern if it's not trying to be anything else (wood effect, speckled, etc).

    I'd rather a slate...

    ...Concrete...

    ...Or metallic look.

    Is this a terrible idea?

  • yes. I find honesty of materials is important. personal though, innit.

  • I did these in our kitchen circa 2000. Be really sure about the adhesive you use, lest the formica split from the wood esp. around the sink.

  • What about a rainbow effect with unicorn inlays?

    Where's your creativity?

  • Your missus knows what she's talking about IMO.

  • I think the adhesives have come a long way, and longevity isn't really an issue any more, PS.

6pt - I absolutely agree. It's definitely not something I'd have considered until recently, but the metallics, in particular are so abstract in pattern, they could be anything (there's one called "zinc" in addition to the one I posted above, which is similar but monochrome). The same applies to the concrete and slate patterns.

The way I see it, and where I'm looking to see if I'm wrong, is that I don't think anyone would look at them (especially mounted on exposed ply) and think, "They're trying to make out they have a zinc worktop".

I had hoped (and again, I'm happy, and looking to be proved wrong) that it looks like a tough work surface, along the lines of:-

Albeit, that ours wouldn't have the integral sink or the smug Californian.

  • won't a nice grey still look like a tough work surface? and then you can find yourself a smug californian to put on it and live the interior design blog photo dream!

  • How about some kind of collage of designer logos?

  • Shows that you have taste and $$$.

  • I'm just convinced that when I next cook curry, I'm going to spill Turmeric everywhere and stain it. Stains, cutting marks, and burn marks will be hidden better by a patterned design.

This is the Zinc pattern FWIW:-

  • @GF - we are getting exactly that (as per your first picture, in white) for our kitchen in the next few weeks. FWIW I think your wife is exactly right.

If you follow your line of spillage reasoning, you will also end up with a pub carpet:

  • Mmmm mmmm.

Fair enough. Have you got any concerns about marking it?

  • Go with the plain grey. Materials that try to imitate other materials always look naff IMO.
If you scratch/burn your lookylikey formica top it's still going to look like a scratched/burnt formica top, not patinad concrete/zinc

  • Hadn't particularly considered it. Will be careful with red wine bottles and have a trivet for hot pans (and may not have a mulled wine party this Christmas). But most worksurfaces either stain and/or scratch if you're not careful. Patina innit.
