• I'm considering a set of wheels from Superstar.

A couple of their standard builds look really tempting: the Pacenti SL23 on Icon Ultra hubs, or the Arc22/Arc31 on Icon Ultra.

In fact, both seem almost too good to be true. Is there a catch here? I've read varying reviews online in terms of build quality - but at the price I could easily afford to have them trued by a local builder.

Some other thoughts: I'm 70kg so their 20-24 standard build is probably a sufficient number of spokes; I would consider asking them to substitute brass nipples instead of alu to add some durability.

@miro_o I understand you have some wheels (or at least rims) from them - any thoughts? Thanks.

  • Sadly I've not ridden mine yet. Out the box they look good, are true and round (as you'd hope) and there are no 'pings' when I throw them around my kitchen...

They're light (Arc31 set is 1605g with tape).

...at the price I could easily afford to have them trued by a local builder.

I know people who've done this with direct-from-china carbon and it's not a great way to go. A badly built wheel will frustrate it's owner and re-builder – better just to buy the parts, lace it yourself and get a trusted LBS to build it up.
