You've probably got it there, I didn't spend much time or money on cables and gave up on them pretty quickly. It seemed I was constantly adjusting for pad wear and they never really stopped me much quicker than well-setup cantilevers.
I reckon the big advantage with discs on cyclocross bikes comes outside of racing, I could have done with a pair when riding the south downs way: steep, loose descents with gates at the bottom are not ideal for cantilevers.
BB7 are general excellent, problem is merely setting up and cable housing.
hydraulic are a world of their own.
