What sort of bike is it? 40 or 50mm stems are usually found on downhill/trail bikes.
Azonic, Renthal, Thomson make super-stubby stems, off the top of my head. All are excellent, but stems rarely give any trouble...

I have a Cinelli track bike, I went for a bike fitting and I need to gain 10mm in the distance between the handlebar and the saddle to get the optimal position. I'm trying to get the most out of my bicycle before the custom build I'm about to commission is going to be ready.

Is your current stem 60mm?

You need to gain 1cm in distance and you're asking for a 4cm stem? So your current stem is 3cm or am I missing something?
1cm isn't gonna make the world of difference and if you're getting a new bike why not focus on making sure that one will work.

@Pifko yes.
@Tijs I actually have to lose 1cm or 2cm I need to double check the measures. In terms of difference after what I seen today it makes a lot hell of a difference in posture when riding. The reason why I'm focusing on the current bicycle is because the builder I think I'm going to work with has 6 months lead time.

Sell the bike and get a smaller one.
I'm serious.

I think it's a little too early to jump into a custom frame, I made that mistake before and end up with a bit a little too long.
Sell the bike, buy another one that fit you better, then ride it.
Doesn't need to be expensive, like a Charge Plug XS.

who did the bike fit? sounds like your current bike needs to be disposed of, as said to you earlier today

Seems like a strange bike fit. Did they not suggest a different bike? Have you considered different style bars to bring you fore/aft in your position?
Theres a Madone I see about with a tiny 40-50mm stem on it. Looks awful and is probably super twitchy to ride. I can't imagine anything less than 90mm is advisable.

@edscoble the bike is on sale on the forum but it didn't raise much interest. Genuine question out of curiosity, having the right measures, how can a custom frame go wrong?
@dancing james I went to cyclefit, I wanted to go bike whisperer but he is not in London anymore.

Sorry, not really helping much.
Deda do a 45mm stem which doesn't look like a chunky MTB stem: http://www.halfords.com/cycling/parts/headsets-stems/deda-elementi-cortissimo-fixie-stem
Halfords link was the first that came up. -

@tallsam yes they did, it's just me willing to try to make the most out of the £850 that my Cinelli cost me. On a track frame 60mm doesn't look bad and handling seems fine too but I have no memory of other measures tried in past. And yes I could get rid of the bull horn but I'll then lose the ability to put my wrists straight

RE: Straight wrists. I'm the same somewhat (although with drops rather than bullhorns). Can't really get on with flat bars or risers for long periods of riding. Ergon grips help but I'd not like to do more than an hour or two like that.
-

Me neither, that's why I'm trying to get the horns closer :)

Are you 100% certain of what you want from a bike? for a lots of people it take them a good couple years, even a decades to know exactly what to get from a custom frame.
YMMV of course.
Sell the Cinelli for £400, use the money to get the smallest Charge Plug that'll fit you better then ride it.

Flip them backwards ;)

• #20
Or get an inverse stem?
-
• #21
Just grip the top of the steerer with your hands really tightly.
-
• #22
This bike is going to end up in anti.
Why bother trying to force something to fit when you can sell and get something that will fit you perfectly?
-
• #23
To all the people who are suggesting to sell, I would be more than happy to do so but so far my announcement simply got lost with no answers and by the look of it no one on here would be particularly interested in it so why bother? At this point I would rather try to get the most out of it rather than just trash it. Moreover considering that all the other measurements are now fine I don't see what's strange in be willing to shorten the stem a bit to achieve something functional for me.
@edscoble that's exactly the price I'm asking and I might be willing to negotiate even.

Haha you're getting a custom frame because you need a tiny stem to ride your current bike? You don't need custom, you need smaller. You can try to convince yourself otherwise because going costom might sound fancy and appealing to you but seriously you're just deluding yourself.
Get a smaller bike. Or don't, it's your time and money to waste.
I have to double check the measures but I think I need either a 40mm or a 50mm. What brand is better between the manufacturer who produce those sizes? Any recommendation? Thanks for your help.
