Magaluf, Majorca, Spain - Just after 8 in the morning, a security officer named George tries to wake a British man found slumped on the beach in Magaluf. George works a nine-hour shift, seven days a week, five months a year. He patrols the beach alone, armed with only a baton and five years’ experience. At around 06:30 each morning, George starts to clear the beach of people who have chosen to sleep there or who have collapsed on it.

Authorities in Magaluf, a popular vacation destination for young Britons, have recently tried to crack down on the binge-drinking tourist culture for which it’s known. According to the Guardian, “Drinking has now been banned on the street between 10pm and 8am, while fines between €750 (£550) and €3,000 will be issued to anyone caught urinating in public, flashing or swimming naked.” Reportage photographer Peter Dench captured all this and more in his project “The British Abroad,” a look at his young countrymen on vacation in Majorca, Croatia and Ibiza.
