• No turbo atm; the time wont be an issue; I do prefer outdoor though.

I'll do some 1, 3, 5, 10 min tests over the weekend or something and share the results.

  • I may be wrong, but without long sustained climbs (which we just don't have around here) I think you'll find it hard to train without a turbo. I know I couldn't do it.

  • Go and airbnb in Cumbria / Yorkshire / Belgium and get some sweet riding in.

    Do lots of riding.

  • Yeah but it's quality. Even I when in london ride the turbo a lot. Because it allows me to just do quality work.

The reason I asked about 3-5min test is it's a pretty simple indicator of aerobic ability and room for movement upwards. Even when poorly trained your 3m power will be a fair indicator of your potential ability. And when trained the difference between 5-20 will give an indicator of how much room for growth you have at a steady power working up towards your Vo2.

I think you could get faster by training, as you no doubt could greatly improve training. However, it might also be you have a small Vo2 max and or poor efficiency and no matter how hard you train you'll never become a great cyclist. But I am sure you can improve greatly from where you are and build your FTP, with some good quality turbo work.

  • Oh come on.

  • With regards to which post?

  • Great stuff!
And yes if I had natural 'talent' (Vo2 max; genetics) I'd have strava KOMs or a sponsor :P

I'll post results for you to have a look.

I will get a turbo when we move into new place and I get the point about sustained efforts i.e. no longer climbs around London.

    Apologies for vague questions.

  • You are generally good at this stuff; where can I go on austerity training camp on cheap in this country and possibly not too far from London? Not that my job aspects are bad but I'd like spend cash as sparsely as possible atm.

  • The idea that Amey, or 99% of the people on this forum, are at the peak of their potential fitness is laughable. There's always gains to be had, even if they only materialise after several years of training.

  • I may be wrong, but without long sustained climbs (which we just don't have around here) I think you'll find it hard to train without a turbo. I know I couldn't do it.

  • Yeah we're talking 1200-1300m climbs, not 2300m!

Have been doing very hilly long rides to prepare, but nothing compares to an hour slogging up an HC. Might even get the turbo out and do 3x20m sessions, but oh god I can't even bear to think about the horror.
Reps of Brasted Chart are about the best Kent has to offer, I think. Boring going up and down the same hill though... guess I could mix it up with Ide Hill, Back Lane, and even Toys for those nasty ++% bits the cols chuck at you.

  • True. Whoever individuals have a natural level and some will have to work a lot lot harder for years to reach the level that others would have almost untrained.

& @amey don't worry about testing. I only asked what your most recent best efforts were. Just get training. If you want to raise threshold then efforts between 10-90min at between 1 and 0.8 really. But the important thing is to do something quality, consistently.

  • Bah, get yourself up this.

  • Go somewhere on a train line? Somerset / Avon, Shropshire, Monmouthshire all have great riding and are easy to get to? Just head into the country.

  • The Peaks is a great call.

YHAs will be open but possibly booked up. Airbnb is always good.

  • its been pretty windy of late - go ride out into the wind until you are fucked, then turn round and come home - another good way of training for long climbs without long climbs

  • Yeah, don't worry about FTP testing. I get an idea what it's doing from racing, don't ever test it.

  • The work that's shown me the biggest gains in terms of raising FTP (Over/Unders, 5x10's, 4x15's at SS/threshold) I stand by the statement that I don't think they're easily achievable on the road.

Maybe it's just me or a lack of skill, but on the turbo I can hold the numbers to within +-5 watts. On the road, no chance.

  • Oh I've been doing a lot of that, like it or not.
I should be ok, been getting in around 1250km a month lately, but Will's 7 years younger and just naturally more talented, the bastard.

  • What are you climbing? Perhaps you should improve your weight rather than your FTP if W/kg is important.

  • No, NP is more useful measure when the effort is not steady state.

  • So don't do them and do a chaingang?

Obvs what you do and how you do it have to do what fits your schedule and lifestyle etc but it's doing something that counts. Being 5w out doesn't matter.

  • Enter an event you bloody chancer!

  • Kunts Online Masturbating?

    Who wants them?
