I can do the week after next, beginning 18 May, apart form the Tuesday 19 May. Where do these usually take place?

Ta, Nisbetts whetstones don't go fine enough for my Aogami knife, I had it sharpened yesterday at the Jap Knife Company and wanted to purchase a Naniwa combi stone but they're sold out.
They also had a clever little abrasive rubber block that removed the very slight tarnish that appears on the blade edge no matter how carefully I dry it. It back to its sharpest!

Yes, AFAIK this King stone is the only 1000/6000 stone available. As my knives are not blunt and I thought 1000 would be fine as the lowest option. And I'd rather have a 6000 alternative for a high buff. My layman's logic anyway; someone please correct me if I've made an error.

Spoke to a woman at the Japanese knife store off Kensington high street, she said that a 1000 grade was fine for most western kitchen blades for fine sharpening.
You'd only need 1000/6000 for Japanese blades as the 1000 would be used for getting it sharp and the 6000 for finishing off.. -

How about this?- http://www.rutlands.co.uk/sp+woodworking-whats-hot-special-offers-woodworking-special-offers-japanese-combination-waterstones-set-of-3+jp1400set3
@lynx - cheers, look forward to it.
@snoops - the last and only one took place at the regents pub by brockwell park, courtesy of someone on here who knows the landlord. Can change, just need friendly pubs. Will get my timetable for that week sometime next week- will get back to you then.

Once again I have bought a knife, a cheap mora from Bahco. The Bahco version is called 1446
The mora version is this
Having had a chance to play with both knives the bahco fit my hand better and was found to be cheaper too. The sheath makes a lovely click as the knife finds its position.

Very nice.
I especially like their angle jig on the grinder. Clever. In related news: I want a grinder like that one.

Used to use borax for silversmithing (mixed to a paste) which was annoying and went everywhere except where you wanted it. Nowadays there are some great fluid fluxes for jewellers which are so easy to use by comparison.
Borax is also good for killing ants. They carry it into the nest for reasons which are beyond me.

I think the grinder you're talking about is called a linisher. There are several kinds - some allow you to adjust the angle of the band or of the little platform. There are also some that combine a belt on one side with a grinding wheel on the other.
In related news: I want one too...

Knife-building specific forums are full with threads of people building their own grinders...
Sadly I don't have the tools/cash/time/space for something like that.Plan for midlife crisis: Build a forge in my cellar and start making rad knives. Like this guy: http://www.wieland-der-schmied.de/en

Going to copy that design for my first knife but not black and a bit of my own ideas.

Reader's now with sheath. I was planning to do one with a wood liner to extend the shape of the handle, but had to knock this one out for the time being and now I don't think I'll make another.

I got fed up struggling with a diamond stone and got this:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B001KN3OKO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00I'm happy to sacrifice perfection for ease and convenience, so far it hasn't failed. Knives from blunt as hell to slicing through paper in 10-15 minutes. It struggled on my Leatherman blade as it's too narrow for the clamp to hold correctly but everything else has worked perfectly.
