So I'm pretty sold on going down the Equilibrium route.
Gonna pair it with a 105 groupset and mavic aksium disc wheels. It's hopefully gonna be around 9-10kg.
I've got a Thomson stem and seatpost, a fizik arione, deda rhm01 drops and some atac pedals to go on it.So I need to decide on some disc brake calipers. Budget for them is £100 max.
I've been looking at the spyre? and the avid bb7?I also want to put a front rack on it for commuting but want it to be fairly easy to remove for road rides. So I need rack recommendations.

What size equilibrium? OTP comes in at near enough 12kg with 105 and TRP's on Aksiums.

Need to pop down to the lbs that I'm getting the frame from to get sized up but either a 54 or 56.
I've seen that build but didn't spot the weight.
I'm guessing the finishing kit may be a little heavier and maybe the tyres as well?
Or maybe I'm just being optimistic.
I would just buy that but at £1500 it's overpriced.
£499 for the frame.
£298 for the groupset (rim brakes to be sold to offset some of the disc calipers).
Aksium discs can be had for £144.
And I have everything else. So I am hoping to build a slightly lighter version of that build for around £400 less. -

Actually just looked on evans cycles... (not the most reliable source I know...)
States 10.3KG for the build.

should you decide for the spyres I've got a pair to sell, never used.

How much would you want for them?
Disclaimer: I've started this thread 4 weeks ahead of buying and building.
To get ideas / 2nd opinion... -

Let's say 90£ for both?
They come with the original package too, although I don't remember if I still have the original discs or if I used them. In case they're missing 80£.I don't want to pollute the thread too much so if you're interested feel free to PM me ;)

haha, cheers.
I'll have a think and might pm!Stopping by the lbs to check out the frame and wheels tonight.
Chat with them and see if we can do some sort of "build price" if I buy the lot from them (which may then include calipers)... -

I'll weigh one tomorrow and see what it taps out at. Really dig those frames. Internal routing and eyelets for Di2 really makes you itch for it. The finishing kit ain't bad, but it's a real slug, and so is the non 5800 chainset. The HY/RD's aren't exactly light either.

Ah awesome!
Thanks for checking.
Yeah it's a nice touch but I am telling myself this will never have better than 105 on it.
It's gonna be doing a 15 mile daily roundtrip in all weather and then the winter road miles.
It's gonna be going through "consumables" pretty quick. Hence the choice to go with discs over rim brakes.
Basically I'm trying to spec a bike on that fine line between half decent and cheap... -

Not really an expert but its a good idea to fit a rack on a carbon fork?
-
• #13
Im in the same boat as you. Hadn't even thought of that. I've been looking at racks that mount on the rim brake mount and the qr skewer/dropouts. Weight wise it's only gonna be like 10kg max. Not sure if that makes a difference?

Can I second dibs these if @Pete4Eyes doesn't want them!? :)

All yours I think. I won't be doing much buying for 4 weeks. Did go to the lbs though. The Aksium disc wheels look great.

I've got 11 speed 105 on the croix and it is excellent.
-
• #17
Cool, if you're sure?
The proposed build sounds great, by the way! I have Rival (10) on my road bike and I really like it, but I am likely going to be using Shimano bits for my next build. The current 105 stuff does look excellent but not sure if I really want/need 11sp.

I don't feel like I'm particularly benefitting from the extra cog, the type of riding I'm doing, but it shifts really well . Much prefer it to the SRAM apex on my previous crossomuter.
I've always preferred Shimano, just find it so precise and feel (for me) it just works .

@Pete4Eyes @TM Cool, well I'll stick with 10sp cos cheap is also good.
Looking forward to trying Shimano mind. When the Rival stuff was set up nicely, the shifting feelss nice and crisp and quite light. BUT, getting it set up can be a pain sometimes - seems to take a lot of very fine cable tension adjustment to eliminate any rubbing, mostly on the front mech at either end of the cassette. In the appropriate chainring of course!

Sounds a little like Shimano and the front mech but there are tips for it.
Might work on sram as well. set the low limit screw in the small ring and the 7th/8th sprocket.
Set cable tension.
Then shift to the 10th/11th (biggest).
then set the low limit screw again. It backs off and takes up the slack in the cable.
Then you only need to use the barrel adjuster (if you have one) for fine tuning.
Works pretty well to get the required tension in the cable. -

So does anyone know of a front rack that I'll be able to fit to the forks on the equilibrium disc carbon forks? They have mudguard eyelets near the bottom of the frame but doubt these can take a load? Any easy to get hold of QR mounted racks?
-
• #24
Cheers for the tip! Will give that a go :)
What kind of rack? I've a Minoura Gamoh which came with QR plates. I drilled them out to fit a solid axle, but they they wouldn't fit over the lawyer lips on the fork. Suspect you'd have the same problem with other mounts :(

Fallback option - get a rear rack and buy calzone...
So I want to build a geared commuter bike.
The requirements are:
Cable actuated disc brakes.
105 or Rival groupset.
Mudguard mounts.
To be able to mount a front rack for carrying a bag for work and pizza, because, pizza.
And I want to use it as a winter road bike so keeping the weight to a minimum would be nice but I'm talking 10kg realistically.
The budget is £1000.
I've been looking at the Genesis Equilibrium disc and think I can build that up with 105 and aksium discs just within the budget. I have a finishing kit to put on so I only need frame, groupset and wheels.
But I've also seen the sram rival London road from planet x for £799 that I am tempted by.

Anyone got any other suggestions?
