  • Yeah.

    Son 28 hub
    Sinewave USB converter
    Supernova e3 triple

I brought them because their the best. Then supernova I got a huge discount. But the alternative of the exposure is expensive. If buying outright id look more at exposure.

I'll double check charging times tomorrow but yeah 1h30 -2max. For garmin.

  • For lights you need to consider how long the nights are and how bright the moon is.
You can get away with using a front light on be seen mode and see the road fine in some places.
So a setup that works one place might not be right in another.

  • Cheers, I'll have a read of that. I don't plan on stopping, certainly not for any length of time that would let me charge stuff. Where'd you hear about the Revos with USB? Could I create a similar setup using the dyno to either directly charge the Six Pack or the Garmin(s)?

  • Over here I usually run my Maxx-D on low and then on Medium for descents or tree-lined really dark roads. But that's more because I'm worried about running out of juice and don't really know it's run time. The Six Pack I can run on Low all night and it's the same brightness as the Maxx-D on Medium, bumping up to Medium if it gets dark/foggy. No idea what France will be like in August, nor where else I might end up using the system.

  • Are there any UK-made versions of this kind of stuff?

The Revo review says to buy one of these horrible looking things.. :)

  • You could always go Dynamo just for just the USB adaptor to charge the garmin and recharge the battery light.
    It's personal preference really.

But dynamos are popular for a reason, self sufficiency and peace of mind are nice.

  • Revo USB stuff from people with contacts... I'll see next week if they have any news...

Dynamo > Sinewave Revolution/Cinq Plug/other regulator > cache battery or Garmin will work, I assume it would charge the sixpack too, I'll see if I can test with my Toro at some point.

Wonder if @gabes might be able to offer some dyno/charging electronics advice?

  • I use revo hub/light.
Then Sinewave revolution with a female connecter for the revo light cable soldered on (I have spares if people need, they are hard to find).

I then charge a cache battery when the light isn't in use, and have an inline low capacity battery for the garmin that can take charge at the same time as charging the garmin. Batteries that allow this are also hard to find!

I spent a fortune on battery packs before I found ones that I'm happy with.

  • That sounds like a pain in the arse. I don't want any custom solutions, just good lighting and enough juice for the numerous failing GPS's I'll have to power :)

I need to look into various setups a bit further. Seems the Germans have most of this area nailed.

  • @hippy
Then splash on a exposure Dynamo front light and a sinewave revolution USB port. And a son Dynamo. Best you can throw money at and you won't be disappoint.

I don't use a cache battery*, just got to remember to charge.

*i carry a 2500mah battery as backup. In case my di2 dies at night while I'm using lights or garmin runs out while needed lights or phone etc. just for peace of mind.

  • Yeah, if you're on a road bike, the current is constant enough that the garmin wont complain about losing external power and beeping, but on a mountain bike, it beeps all the fucking time as you dip below 10mph. So a cache battery is pretty important.

  • Good point that! You can turn the beeping off. But I figured it's not very good for the device to have power then no power constantly too it. So yeah battery good idea there as who cares if you kill a battery but don't want to kill the battery in your device.

I need to unplug the device when I go under 6.5mph as that's where I lose power from the Dynamo to charge.

  • Thinking of getting a budget but reliable front dynamo + light set-up for my daily / touring bike.
Doesn't need to be a super-powerful light as it's mainly for commuting, but it would be great to able to recharge my phone on touring trips.

    Any advice appreciated.

  • Not sure if you've made a decision yet, a nice clear write up of the Exposure/Sinewave/charging setup and 'workflow' here: http://www.composite-projects.co.uk/2014/09/dynamos-lights-power-on-the-trail/

  • I'm thinking that I might just get away with what I already own and stick with battery power. If I get one of the batteries your article mentions I can charge it and use it as further backup for lights, phone, GPS if need be.

My Six Pack should last two nights.

A Garmin with extended battery pack will last ~24hr (maybe less with navigation on) so if I take two Garmins, two Garmin battery packs and then a 4000mah backup pack (http://www.7dayshop.com/products/7dayshop-usb-powerbank-emergency-charger-lithium-polymer-4000mah-7DAY-IPHONE4S-7003) I should be ok for the PBP. I could probably just take the 4000mah pack and leave the two Garmin packs at home but it will depend on adapters, charging while in use, etc.

  • Then again... the dynamo would mean I'd never have to worry about remembering to charge 47 things before I went on a 400k+ ride...

  • Not mine but tempted to do a budget version of this on my fake bob-yak trailer (made by Ridgeback - surprisingly good considering).

  • Looks good to me, similar to what I'm going for. I'm speccing this front light though:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Busch-M%C3%BCller-Lumotec-dynamo-lights/dp/B009IUOE6O

Because of the USB charging. Doesn't review amazingly well due to water ingress, but I'm thinking liberal use of electrical tape and grease in joins could solve that, any thoughts?

  • will be a great combo, the front light is awesome.

I have two set up on my cargo bike and they are super bright!

  • dynamofos, anyone interested in a commuter/ tourer wheelset?
    http://www.rosebikes.co.uk/product/detail/aid:556231
bought a year ago but used a different bike than originally planned x

  • will be interested to know how you get on with that, so almost made the plunge for the usb power, but bottled it.

also lol at this comment on the amazon page:

the answer should have been: "No, You are not included in the package"

  • Cool. Thanks guys.

  • Thanks for all the great information shared already on this thread.

I'm keep on getting the SP PL-8 for my surly disc trucker but was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of where i can find a 36hole version at a good price. Seems most of the german websites only have the 32hole version.

  • CNC bikes might have them, they seem to rebadge the SP range.
