  • Don't buy a Sony they are dogshit. I hate mine.

  • @sacredhart - How come? And which one do you have?

@branwen - I think the moto g is out for the reasons you mentioned. Plus the newer ones are just that bit more expensive, so I think replacing my iPhone 4s screen is cheaper and gives me a better phone.

  • I have the Z1 compact and it does the job - just don't update the firmware/android version.

  • the battery on my oneplus is playing up again!!!! I charged it fully at work today at about 4pm and now it only has just over half left, the phone has been only standby pretty much since... what now??? Anyone?

  • @hugo7 there was some discussion about Sony phones earlier in the thread. Could still be a good shout if you're up for flashing a custom/stock rom to it but the Sony software is just a bit naff.

  • Take a look in the battery stats bit to see what's chewing your battery.

I've not had any issues since the latest firmware was installed (OS version 12.0-YNG1TAS17L, Android version 5.0.2, build number LRX22G)

  • What version of CM are you running on it? I'm on CM12.1 nightlies and no battery issues at all at the moment, but the nightly from a week or so ago was pretty battery hungry.

I'd suggest downloading wakelock detector to see if anything's keeping the phone from sleeping. I think this needs root?

Also, the OPO's built in battery stats page should tell you the biggest battery hog.

  • I am running exactly as what MrDrem is running - OS version 12.0-YNG1TAS17L, Android version 5.0.2, build number LRX22G an I only charged the phone until mid day and now it's draining again. When I am at work, the phone is mostly on standby, so as when I sleep...

  • I'm on CM12.1 nightlies and no battery issues at all at the moment, but the nightly from a week or so ago was pretty battery hungry.

How are you finding the 12.1 nightlies? I'm on the final 12.0 nightly which has been stable as hell so I've been putting off updating.

  • No problems at all that I can think of. I've been updating pretty much every day and have noticed a couple of small issues (Bluetooth message support issue made BT go nuts) that get resolved pretty quickly.

Generally would definitely recommend it. Make a backup before flashing it and to be extra safe, take a peek at the xda nightlies thread. They'll discuss any issues/fixes as soon as they're apparent.

  • Any suggestions on the best way to backup absolutely everything (i.e. a snapshot of your phone's current state).

Thought I may give the Android M developer preview a try but I doubt I'll be using it permanently so would want to restore my current phone state.

  • Are you rooted?

  • Yes. Rooted, unlocked and running CyanogenMod.

  • Got TWRP?

  • Yep. I tried the full backup on TWRP before but it didn't seem to work. Not sure why.

  • Hmm, when you say full backup, what do you mean? I normally back up boot, data and system and enable compression.

This'll back up your ROM, so should you find the M snapshot crap you can wipe system and then restore your old ROM.

The above doesn't back up your pics, music and whatever else you have on your 'sdcard', as Android calls the non ROM bit of your internal storage (or external, depending on what device you've got). But then wiping and restoring your old backup won't affect this partition either.

Let me know if that makes no sense or I'm talking out of my arse, but that's my understanding of it and I've restored a few TWRP backups when a nightly's caused problems.

  • Hmm, just looking at the TWRP backup screen I don't recognise it. It may have been ClockworkMod I used last time possibly.

So backing up boot, data and system and enabling compression will create a zip file which I can restore like any other ROM? Is that right? Will that have all of my apps with their settings, etc?

    Cheers for the help

  • Yep, that's it. That'll create a folder under sdcard/TWRP/BACKUPS with all app data, system and boot. My one is about 3.5Gb with the files compressed, yours will be dependent on number of apps etc. It's not one big zip file, but a series files that TWRP can restore your old system from.

To restore, reboot into TWRP recovery, go to 'wipe', swipe to factory reset (it says 'wipes data, cache and dalvik (not including internal storage), then when it finishes that, go to restore and choose your backup to restore. 5 minutes later you're sorted.

  • Anyone got any recommendations for good ways to control a pc remotely using a phone/tablet? I just mean like adjusting volume, playing and pausing media files etc

  • Unified Remote.
Has specific 'remotes' for different applications on your computer. Works well with VLC if you set up the http-based remote.
Also can act as a mouse if you really need.

  • Most common media players have their own remote apps and I'd go with those if you only want media control.

  • N5 screen cracked. What's required to fix it and where is it cheapest?

  • I bought a new screen and digitised frame for my daughter's Moto G on ebay. Watched the YouTube video and fitted it all for 25 quid. I would imagine you could do the same.

  • I've sent the bloke to ebay. Looks like ~£40 will get the bits required. Cheers!

  • Condensation has finally killed my nexus 5. Plugged it in last night after leaving it in a steamy bathroom and BZZZT. Not charging.

Tried plugging it into my computer at work and smelt burning. My mac then said to unplug usb device because its drawing too much power. Unplugged, scorched usb head.

    Fuuuuu
