I've noticed over the last few weeks, well since changing from my winter bike to my summer commuter bike I've been getting a pain on the outside of my left knee (ITB?) mainly once I start walking and not so much when riding and a stiff right hip. Am wondering if its anything to do with having LOOK pedals on the summer bike and Ultrega pedals on both the winter bike and the weekend bike which I'm using the same shoe on. Am planning to change the pedals over at the weekend.
Does anyone have a good stretching routine, am really bad at stretching before and after any rides.

Sorry, I just posted a link to a great article on stretching, but it's vanished. I'll try to find it elsewhere.
Edit - found it in an email. PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

Can you post it here?

Stretching is overrated; would think different bike setup if ever so minimal.

As I mentioned will try changing the pedals over see if that makes a different, but stretching can't hurt (or shouldn't hurt)

Stretching has become the difference between lots of pain and limited riding and long, comfortable miles and the ability to push (for me) high power.

I'll try when near a computer.

Still got ITBS. Strengthening the VMO, aligning cleats properly (twice), stretching religiously and always being conscience not to use the outer muscles of my legs has made a difference. But the ITB is still as tight as ever, it's just that the other muscles are now strong enough to relieve some of the work. I'm not complaining too much because I can cycle and fence without much discomfort.
Today the specialist booked me in for an 'injection' next week. He said it dissolves something or the other. I hope it works.

Geez I am in the same boat. My knee started acting up about 2 months ago. I couldn't even walk for 3/4 days without a serious hop. I get immense pain and the knee feels as if it can't support the lower part of leg.
I haven't been able to even keep my knee in one position for long. Otherwise sheer pain. My knee is fu@&?d.
I'm so pissed off I'm thinking about selling it all and getting a motorcycle. I never had to deal with stuff like this in surfing. May go back to swimming as a form of exercise.
I'm going for my MRI next week but I am guessing it won't be good news. Now my knee clicks as well.I am so mad.

^what did you do to get an MRI so quickly!

i went to GP and insisted on it.

You've got a good GP. Took mine 3 months to refer me to a specialist who then took 2 months to refer me to physio who the GP had to also refer me to. Another 2 months later I get my first physio session... got an x-ray and ultrasound to no avail. I'm just afraid there's an underlying problem and that strengthening is just covering it up.

I'm seriously looking at getting a cruiser bike. Friendly on the knees.

It's not about the bike. You've either done something wrong or have an underlying problem. For example, I cycled to Cambridge and back with badly aligned 0 float cleats. I deserve what I got. I've learned a lot as a result and am slowly making progress. At least I can cycle on a daily basis now and do longer rides on the weekend. A year ago I was on the verge of giving up.
Be patient, figure out the root of the problem and take on expert advice. A good bike fit is always recommended. It's worth the money many times over.

6 months later and I have an MRI scan tomorrow.
Wonder what they find..

Just started Physiotherapy had my x-rays and my knees may require Surgery. I have my MRI in July. After a consultation with a Sports Orthopaedic Surgeon to see what can be done.
I'm seriously in two minds to pack it all in and sell my track collection, bike and all. The only exercise I am capable of doing now without knee pain is cross trainer so I have my physio again on Tuesday to assess. So frustrating. Why can't my knees just heal.

I had a prior injury to both knees as I use to be a competitive swimmer, 100m and 200m breaststroke. X-rays showed my knees have been misaligned.
Will wait to see if I make any progress otherwise I'm selling All.

Gutted^2 - can you/physiotherapist backtrack how the knees has become misaligned?

Physio said that if I strengthen the inner muscles I may be able to align my left knee but my right may need surgery as it is also tilted.
Due to building up my outer muscles from breaststroke kick I now have a significant imbalance in muscle strength.
Dr. said surgery is common for competitive athletes and I may regain about 80% strength of what I had before once recovered and may be able to ride again but I'm not sure he understands the strain of brakeless riding. The constant jarring given to the knee. I suspect I may have to use a front brake if I am lucky. Otherwise No more riding. Pretty shit.

:( Too many mays and might not enough certainty.
Anyone else had knee surgery is able to ride brakeless again???
can your private physio refer you to a NHS x-ray/ MRI scan?
I know I have to go to my GP, but wondering if anyone has had private physio and been refered to something on the NHS..
Basically trying to avoid the 8 week waiting list to see a NHS physio when I have already gone private. My physio is not recommending I have any further sessions with her as she can't locate the issue and her next step would be to go for a scan.
