  • Is that the all seeing eye in the dropout? B-)

  • This is definitely one of my favourite bikes on here

  • Probably picking this up today. Ti frame & CK headset at a bargainous price means resistance is futile and it looks like I'll be building up some sort of mtb over the next months... Question is whether to leave pink hs in and continue down the hhsmtb road or to just throw some cheap stuff on and ride it.

  • Getting new wheels for my everyday / touring bike.

Needs to be cheap so I can leave it around town, and reliable so I can fit-and-forget. Also, I quite like the idea of a dynamo front hub so I don't have to keep buying new lights when I loose / break them.

    Thoughts so far...

Rims: Mavic A319 (I'm using rim brakes, btw)
    Front: Shimano Alfine
    Rear: Deore T610
    Spokes etc: whatever LBS recommends.

Any thoughts / suggestions on any of the above?
What are the best options for decent but budget dynamo + light combos for commuting?

  • You can get cheap touring/commuting wheels with Shimano dynamo hubs and Mavic rims from Rose

  • This, for the money you can't go wrong, the A319 is a pleasure to true, even if you break 5 spokes it still not enough to cause brake rubs (I'm talking 36h).

  • 100% get some lairy ano on there.

  • Sweet! Cheers man.

  • and a little hose to the brakes

I haz some new, unused shimano straight connector hoze going cheaps. PM me if you want it.

  • Thanks Heldring and Ed, nice to know my rim and hub choices aren't completely daft.
    And Rose is brilliantly cheap!

What might people recommend in terms of a decent commuting light to go with the Alfine hub?
(It would be great to be able to recharge phones etc when I'm touring too, if that's possible?)

  • There's a dynamo topic you can check out actually.

Budget wise, Busch & Muller Cyo IQ is good to go for.

  • I have a wheelset that may be perfect for you...

  • After a weekend of riding I should say the wheels built by Fitzrovia cycles feel great. Mack hubs, open pro's and Sapim race spokes with 25mm Vittoria corsa sc are so smooth. We'll see how the tyres hold up to everyday riding. They do feel quite a bit stiffer than the Archetype wheelset I had on, which is unexpected.

  • Surely cheap stuff & ride, then replace with purple anno ringle bits when it breaks

  • ^ was thinking the same. Unsure of mtb sizing & all that so better wait with the NOS 90s crap until I'm sure.

  • Wow 2gen 600 is porn it the rear derailleur 600 ?

  • This was my first track frame, and it has been sitting in the basement for too long.
Pulled it out and treated it with a new paintjob, some very wide hip hop wheels (mavic119), cockpit and drivetrain.

  • nice

  • Thanks. I'm looking forward to learn whether 23/24mm tyre combo on 25mm rims is a bad idea for the sidewalls. The comfort is amazing on gravel though :)

  • It'll be fine, are they're 25mm internal or external?

Would advise 28mm to reduced risk of damaging the rims on the gravel.

  • They are 19mm internal and 25mm external.
There is only clearance for a 23mm tyre up front and I want to use it for winter training on mixed surfaces, so the only way of getting more comfort was with wider rims, but I might be pushing it.
However, xm119 rim is wider than archetype and costs one fifth of it, so it's a cheap experiment and it doesn't matter if the rims get a bit scratched up :)
For now they're amazingly comfy and roll great with low pressure

  • Even 23mm is fine on 19mm, I've ridden on similar (with A719), your concern is simply that the low inflation will have a higher risk of chipping the rims despite the low/zero risk of pinch flat.

chipped rims not a problem if you ride brakeless as you said, but it might cause further damage than just chipping.
