Why would contador gift a win here? I can't think of a single reason.

Me either, but that's what it looked like to me, and other people by the looks of it.

Contador was riding with bettering Aru as his primary concern. So best not to go into the red (chasing for the stage) only for him to come round late on.

I think he probably sussed Landa and Trofimov were still strong.
