  • Those holes look like they were drilled closer to the edge than other hubs I'm familiar with.

  • It's Arthur's Paul hub for polo, I'd be worried I over tensioned them but the other flange on that hub had higher tension and is deformed much less, although still a bit. The rear was done to a similar tension and seems fine.

  • Maybe Paul are too fancy for polo use.

  • Didnt the spokes all come out long? Maybe the holes weren't drilled at the spec diameter?

  • That was much more to do with hurried internet buying rather than the recommended measure first, buy later, they were also built up with too short spokes quite recently as a temporary fix. Hub was fine then.

    Impact damage? Don't polo wheels routinely take quite heavy impacts to the spokes?

  • Yeah, especially at the front. Figured I'd get a few more opinions on possible causes in case I fucked it up.

  • was it 48h? losing one spoke won't matter!

    are the holes drilled closer to the edge of the flange to accomodate the extras from a 36h hub?

  • Phil will tell you to call Paul...

    Paul stopped making 48h hubs a while back, emailed them about it and the response from the man himself was that too much material was being removed. The holes don't look much further out than other comparable 36h hubs. Assuming the spoke tension wasn't regularly checked and a spokes tightened court-side when required... I'd put it down to bad luck and buy something cheap enough to replace in case it happens again...

  • paul, phil, i'm sure all these american machinists are related.

  • The weight spoke manufacturers quote is always for a 260 mm one, which is a short size... you will need more like 285-290, so spokes will be heavier. Brass nipples are 1 g each, while the alloy ones are about 0.2-0.3 g.

    I didn't know of them either... I've just fitted a pair and they appear to be just as grippy but more robust... although also less supple... I just find the Vittoria too expensive

  • Fatigue Cracks normally develop at 90 degrees to the spoke direction... that type of failure is unusual... looks like there isn't enough material to hold the spoke tension

  • I don't ride cyclocross so not so aware can someone confirm? A cyclocross bike like the Canyon Inflite Al 8would that take a hub of 135mm OLN like a moutain bike hub or 130mm OLN like a road bike hub? Have come across a Hope Pro 2 evo and potential customer but wanted to be sure it is the right fit for his frame and the Canyon website doesn't seam to provide that relevant data?

  • 90% certain that would be 135mm as it's a disc frame and most manufacturers have gone 135mm as it gives them a wider range of disc hubs to source from. All 3 of my disc compatible cross frames have been 135mm.

  • Doubt it's old enough for fatigue cracks, I did think it's too fancy for polo when it was bought, they're very light so not much metal there.
