• I am building myself some clincher road wheels soon. It will be my third wheelset. First two have been great so far. Both cyclocross wheelsets with Novatec disc hubs built with DT Rev spokes.
As I am going for Shimano 105 5800 groupset I have decided I will go with the hubs as well. I am thinking about pairing them with DT Comp (for extra stiffness compared to Rev spokes right?). But what rim should I go with? I want the most stiff wheelset I can get sub 1800g.
My old road wheelset is Hope Pro III, DT Rev and Velocity A23 (32h 3x) at 1643g. They were a great upgrade from Mavic Aksiums and other budget wheels I have had.
What rims equivalent to A23 (size and weight) should I look for? Preferably something cheaper or better value.
I will probably be running 27c Open Pave tyres on it. I weigh 95kgs and ride gravel etc on my road bike.

  • Problem is that you want stiff, light and cheap and of course you need do make a choice.

The 5800 hubs are on the heavy side, so being within 1800 grams with those and DT comp is not an easy task... you'd have to look at Stans 340, which are not meant for someone your size and will not take pressure in excess of 90 PSI with inner tubes.

As for the tyres: have you considered Panaracer Gravel King? Much cheaper than the Vittoria and more robust

  • Thank you for your answer. You are probably right. I will stick with A23, as I am really pleased with them. Both looks and performance...

    Novatec X-light (317g) + A23 (900g) + DT Comp (382g) = 1600
    Novatec X-light (317g) + A23 (900g) + DT Rev (283g) = 1500
    Shimano 105 (523g) + A23 (900g) + DT Comp (382g) = 1805
    Shimano 105 (523g) + A23 (900g) + DT Rev (283g) = 1706

    • nipples and spoke washers...

    Thinking....

Good tip on the tyres, I didn't know of them.
