Hmmm, thousands of cyclists managed for a very long time before the qr gubbins were invented.
I've no qr gubbins on my front just now as I bent the original stays to go around a disc caliper then changed forks/brakes so had to use stays off an older bike. I've set the guard up to be closer at the bottom than at the top so anything that does get in won't jam.
You can take the guards out of that plastic clip (leaving the small metal loop). Its only there to act as a quick release but really its not that needed. I never fit it on my bikes (I used to for customer's bikes though).
