Anyone else having problems with rides not uploading to either Garmin Connect or Strava since the new Garmin Express update. Can't find up to sync it as its no longer automatic.
Edit, Answer my own question. Need to attach my account again.

Thought I'd put this here too.. I have a very old Garmin with bike mount and PC cable (needs a serial port) if anyone wants it. I think it's the model before the Etrex
It's a Geko 201 http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/garmingeko.php Takes AAA batteries, you can upload a GPS file to follow if you're happy just following a line on a screen (you can't put maps on it). and it can show distance, speed, etc.
If you want it send me a PM and I'll stick it in the post. GEKO HAS NOW GONE
I also have a Dakota 10 with bike mount gpstracklog.com/2010/02/garmin-dakota-10-review.html . AA powered, touchscreen, can upload OSM maps to it, do turn by turn, etc. Doesn't have Ant+ (which is why I replaced it with an Edge).
Will be willing to sell this with bike mount for £50.

Fair play to garmin.
Brand new Edge 1000 turned up today. Hope this one works. -

Had my second fatal crash on the Garmin yesterday. At around 410k, just a k before the finish, the unit turned off and then on turning on would load and then turn straight off again. Thankfully, I was so close to the finish I could navigate myself and the files were still saved. Still, maybe an excuse to buy an 810?

I'm slightly surprised that you don't run two, given that it's such a bugger if the only unit fails.
FWIW my 810 has performed faultlessly since I got it - but I've never asked it to deal with the sort of times and distances which you cover.

My 1000 repeatedly told me "Touchscreen Locked" on yesterday's 400km audax. Am I accidentally locking it, or is it a bug? and can I easily unlock it? I generally managed to do yesterday by swearing at it, randomly pressing buttons and waiting...

I always have a route sheet as a backup.

• #2062
Do you know where to buy them though?
-
• #2063
Where's the cheapest place to grab an 810 now (with or without maps)?
-
• #2064
Can anyone help me with this; I'm thinking about getting a garmin edge for directions rather than cadence/heart rate etc. What is the most basic model that offers this? And what is the difference between turn by turn navigation and mapping?
-
• #2065
Edge Touring, come with maps less than the price of a 510.
-
• #2066
@fullyclipped Cheapest would be something like a Dakota 10 or Etrex with OSM maps. They're a bit chunkier than the Edge touring though and not as cycle oriented (although if you set them up correctly they'll still do all you need).
Turn by turn is like a car sat-nav - you'll get an arrow telling you to turn left or right or whatever. Mapping will just show you a line on the map to follow (I tend to use this, turn by turn always seems to have some annoying foibles).
I wouldn't worry too much about buying one with maps. It's easy enough to download and install maps from openstreetmap. However, in the past I have found that the Garmin maps work a little better for searching for addresses on the fly.

I think it should be said to each new owner of a garmin - prepare to be dissapointed

Have you uploaded rides from the Dakota 10 to Strava? It's not a supported device but it looks like they can be downloaded as GPX or TCX files and then uploaded?

On a separate note, any suggestions for a cheapo gps where its sole purpose will be to create a gpx file of where I've walked or whatever so I can tag photos with the position (I can do the tagging photos bit, just want something cheap to clip to my rucksack to create the track).
This kind of thing http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canmore-GT-730FL-Rechargeable-Waypoints-Compatible/dp/B004BBD1QE/ Anyone any experience of this or similar?

Was it raining at the time? Because the 1000 has a capacitive screen rather than a resistive one, it can't tell the difference between a fingertip and a drop of rain,so it has a function which automatically locks the screen. Bloody annoying, isn't it.
-
• #2072
@jdp I haven't (I don't have a Dakota 10 anymore) but it was easy enough to get a gpx file off it I seem to remember, maybe using Basecamp. It's more of a faff than using an Edge though so if you're planning to do it regularly it could get annoying.
I'm not sure whether it would auto-upload to the Garmin Connect website (it's all changed now) in which case you can link that to Strava.

Ok, cheers. Probably look at an Edge series one then.
-
• #2074
To use strava etc with the dakota and etrex series is fairly simple no need for any third party programs or add ons etc etc.
Use the upload actvity from file option.
With your device plugged in navigate to the archive folder or other folder as appropriate and select the requisite gpx file.
For info the etrex series start recording as soon as they are powered up, at the end of a ride you have the option of saving the current track, this will be saved to the archive folder with the current date and time.
If you do not save the ride it will be saved automatically at the end of the day if you have the data options set to auto archive daily. There are other auto archive options such as weekly or when the track log is full. -

I often come to this thread when thinking about upgrading my 200. Then I read the last few comments where everybodies has stopped working and think again.
Yes it can probably be reset but a lot of other things will be reset.
If you decide to do a reset save your settings etc. first
