  • really more notchy than the shimano? they feel pretty notchy, can't say i've noticed the notchiness while riding though.

    which model novatec?

  • which model novatec?

    D352SB-11 for 130mm rear spacing. D712SB-11 for 135mm.

  • I like my CL25 as a cross rim, not sure I'd want a tubeless specific rim for a commuter though.

  • @danstuff thanks

@lardboy I thought they were tubeless ready meaning they could take a normal tyre and tube as well?

  • @thecycleclininc I'm skeptical that it actually makes any significant difference once laced into a wheel. However I'd still buy a SON any day, I already run the top shimano one and I think it's excellent.

  • I'm in, would like to see map of that, surely it should be a circular route?

  • I was just trawling for vaguely wheely sounding places ... by all means reconfigure!

  • @eldweebio hah I only just spotted the 'circular' joke ... you've oviously never had a good look at my wheel builds, none are particularly round.

  • I have a solid axle mavic (ellipse) front wheel for which I want to convert to through/ quick release.
Will this be all that is needed? (Is there better?)

That link doesn't point to anything. I suspect that you can use the Cosmic Elite axle in the Ellipse front hub, although in general if you want a QR front wheel which otherwise matches the Ellipse, it's easier just to get a whole Cosmic Elite, which Mavic have conveniently machined for you so you don't have to fill you brake pads with shards of aluminium oxide.

  • 28 holes + 85kilos of me + 10kilos(ish) luggage = round wheels that stay round?

  • That has cones for loose balls, presumably the 11×3/16" typical for Shimano front hubs. You need something with registers for the cartridge bearings in the Ellipse hub. I've had appropriate bearing registers made to fit onto M9/M10×1.0 axles, but they came out at more like £30 per wheel in addition to the cost of the axle and QR skewer.

  • 85kilos of me + 10kilos(ish) luggage = round wheels that stay round?

Almost anything, to be honest. I've had no trouble with more mass and fewer spokes. What tyres are going on them? That should always be the starting point, then you can pick rims.

  • I was going for 28c tyres. I was looking at the cl25 as they are on offer at planet x. Haven't really looked at anything else but open to alternatives

  • Have you already got 28H disc hubs?

  • No, but I nearly bought a shutter precision dynamo in 28 holes from Germany for cheap.

  • I was just asking because you have many more options in 32H, both rims and hubs. 28H is no man's land - not enough aero benefit over 32H to make it worth the trouble.

  • Looks like touring wheels?

For touring I would fit as many spokes as possible at the rear... firstly because the wheel will be stronger and last longer given equal everything else, but more importantly as if you had to break a spoke in the middle of nowhere for any reason, you would be able to cycle to nearest LBS, thing which realistically you might or might not be able to do with a 28 H and certainly not with anything lower.

For touring with load, 36 would be my choice.

The front is less important, in that it's less likely to cause you grief, so if you have a 28, that will do, although I would still go for 32 or 36 if travelling long distance.

  • Commuting really rather than touring. My other wheels which they are replacing have been 32 spokes and are still nice and round. The cheap hubs also come in 36 as well so that's an option.

Not many 'nice' rims come in 36H these days, although there are still plenty which are good for commuting

  • what about disc specific rims available in 28 and 32 hole drillings. Then I can have the sp dynamo up front and something a bit stronger for the rear.

  • Unless you're getting a massive discount on a 28H dynohub, you might as well keep it simple and use 32H up front too.

  • Discount is not massive maybe 20 quid I think
