  • The problem is that the London Mayoral elections are basically celebrity elections, for two main reasons--the Mayor's responsibilities are actually quite limited, and nowhere near those that city mayors have elsewhere, and secondly despite these limited responsibilities the Mayor has too much executive power where he or she has power and most decisions come down to him or her (although so far it's only been hims). The London Assembly is virtually powerless, having one power of voting on the budget and that's it, basically--the committees that they spend a large part of their time on have no decision-making powers and mainly publish reports. So, there's basically no very intense discussion on actual policies and it becomes a personality contest.
