  • Quick question! I just posted a For Sale ad but cant see it up, I'm new to the system but is there any way to manage the post, or view it myself? Is it in some sort of classified limbo? haha

  • Lots of images, especially via photobucket, is one of the signs of spam. So it went into the moderation queue. I've approved it now, and it's visible... but, don't edit that post otherwise it will be flagged as spam again, instead just reply to the thread when you want to change things.

  • Spot on, cheers!

  • I want to remind people that PayPal as Gift is never a good payment method for something you're buying off other people. And in the rules we do say... don't do it.

If you send money as a gift, then the whole transaction has no buyer protection. You should be expecting to get ripped off. Simple as that.

Any decent seller will be factoring in the small PayPal fee into the price (if they expect payment by PayPal).

It should be treated the same as postage costs... if you're picking up in person then you wouldn't pay those. And if you're picking up in person and paying cash then you wouldn't pay PayPal fees.

Anyone caught demanding PayPal as Gift as the only acceptable payment method, especially if they haven't got a track record to speak of (lack of trust) will be excluded from selling stuff in future.

PayPal as Gift is a bad bad thing, and I really don't want to have helped facilitate fraud and theft by in any way letting people think it's an acceptable payment method.

  • Sorry for the gravedig but can something be done about the blaten posting across multiple sites with ads. It's getting extremely common to see randoms appear and post a bunch of ads to then get pulled up about ads on pedalroom/ebay/gumtree/other and then the next week/day when they go to sell the next item(or even the same one) they just do it again with no fucks given.

  • Sorry for the gravedig but can something be done about the blaten posting across multiple sites with ads.

Report it to me via PM or mods thread... they either get instantly perma-banned or a warning (and perma-banned next time).

  • A question on classifieds and identity.

I've been working with the police again recently, to help identify those who may be selling stolen items on LFGSS.

One problem we've had is that it is possible for someone to not identify themselves: To never provide PayPal info to others (because it's cash in hand), to never give out contact info (as the buyer does, and the seller contacts them), to never use their real name, to have used a non identifying email to sign-in, etc, etc.

So it occurs to me we're back to the question of whether a donation should be compulsory for posting adverts.

Why? Because donating via PayPal requires that you've fully identified yourself with a third party, and by us taking even £1 from you we get to know who you really are... and if you happen to be selling stolen goods then we can supply that information to the police when they make an official request.

I guess the big question is simply: Would everyone be fine with this?

If the answer is yes, I'll figure out a way to make it work.

  • A one off payment of a small amount I think is a decent idea. It would also make people more comfortable sending money to newer members etc

  • Exactly.

And for the purpose of classifieds, we'd not expire this donation so quickly. Perhaps just once every 2 years to require a donation (for as little as £1). Not enough to be an issue to anyone, but just enough and just frequently enough to have proven the identity of someone.

  • Yep, I'd be absolutely fine with it as would most people I'm sure. A little extra revenue for the forum can't hurt either.

  • I'm fine with this. Would there be anything in place to stop someone wanting to sell stolen goods from replying to a Wanted ad?

  • I think at least 10 quid a year if people want to sell items. If they don't like it, piss off to eBay

  • Probably. Aber bitte nicht in diesem Ton.

  • Not everybody is on here to sell goods and make money. Some people are just members of the forum who might want to pass on a part they don't need any more. £10 is a bit much for people who don't often sell anything but just want to be able to should they be so inclined.

  • and if you happen to be selling stolen goods then we can supply that information to the police when they make an official request.

    Happy to make a donation.

What is an 'official request?' Will info just be given when there are reasonable grounds to suspect? Would not like my info. to be given if just a fishing expedition by the police. Also, will other users be able to ask this info. from you?

  • £1 donation for every sold item (worth over, let's say, £40) sounds good & fair

  • would be so useful if when selling a frame/bike you were obligated to put the size in the title

is there really nothing that can be done with such obvious cross-posters?

  • ^^ this

  • Yeh man. I like standard titles. They bring order, save time in wasted clicks, look tidy.

    1999 Trek Mamiligon 54cm £1100 London
    197? Pinarello Pista rat 58cm f&f £200 Hungary
    2010 Planet X Nanolight Medium £650 Ilkley

I'd buy that for a dorrah.

  • also means you can just type in the size and the majority of the results will be relevant.

  • Before I depart I must say that I sold something. The buyer PMed me, asking to use Paypal. I asked for gift as I object to paypal charges. I did not know about the 4% thing. I also offered bank transfer. Next thing a message comes through about being banned. I've never come across this on other sites. I do object to being seen as a possible criminal even though I'm well known on other sites and even have a Blog and even my pic on Avatar. I've also just successfully sold a set of wheels on here with no complaints. The crazy thing is that I've just sussed that it must have been the buyer reporting. But he's gone ahead and paid me anyway and arranged delivery. Crazy! I'm tempted to return his money as I've been offered full price of other buyers. However I'm not that bad a person no matter what the mods think. I believe a buyer can make his own mind up on how he wants to pay his money. I don't see why the Mods have to nanny us all. Plus label decent people and lose members.
Just my thoughts of course but I'm annoyed and need to air them.

  • @adenough other buyers on here or other buyers from shitty cross posting?

"lose members" is something about people who are here for the forums and not just the classifieds to make a quick buck and dodge ebay/paypal fees.

  • A quick buck off a 30yr old bag. mmmmm. I don't think so. Of course your opinion and you are entitled, but I would have been more polite and of course you are once again labelling people that you do not know. Quite offensive actually. Thankyou for confirming your prejudice. I'm now glad to leave and I'm sure you will be glad to see the back of a polite honest cyclist. Please do not reply as I will be banning this site from my mailbox.

  • All he was doing was taking a quick educated guess at why you were labelled that way. The reason being that you have posted 4 threads all in the classifieds section and don't really seem to have commented much on anything outside of them.
